Sadly as some have mentioned MBI has been sold and Sig and his signature lab coat are no longer there. I have been going to MBI with my Mercedes for over 12 years, was always dealt with fairly and trusted the guiding expertise of Sig over his shop. Sig always had the common sense approach to dealing with classic mercedes.
On my last visit to this shop for an oil change, I experienced what was nothing less than cheesy used car pressure sales tactics as I was passed between a mechanic and a Sales "specialist". I was told I needed over $2,400 in repairs. Over Half of the repairs were ones that I had already completed a year ago (parts still shiny and in perfect working condition). Another repair that I was quoted over $400 for was actually a loose bolt. I decided to not challenge and escape with my car and my hand clutching my wallet.
This is no longer the Mbi that I have felt so lucky to live near.
Sad Day, I am looking for another place for the those repairs I can't make myself.
Last week I brought in my wife's 04 C230 Kompressor for:
-Schedule A service, car has 105,900miles
-Bad cold start racket noise when put in reverse or in gear with brake on when engine is under load (this problem is well known in online forums for this engine, very embarrassing because it is very loud along with car shaking)
-Fuel filter replace
-Brake fluid flush
-One bulb out on rear license plate
Bill came to $827 USD, they replaced the V belt and the alternator pulley to fix the racket noise, did all of the above services and washed the car. They fixed the racket problem, car drove great. I saw Rick there and a lady named Kim walked me to my car, she was helpful in suggesting that a paintless guy she knew could remove a huge dent (deer) on my front fender for $300 (body shop quoted $1200) I may take her up on it. All in all, I thought they did a decent job. I have been bringing my old 300E and the 190E there about dozen times in the past when Sig was the man, it sure felt like family then. Mind you, they are not without mistakes, I remembered following my 190E home after a tranny/filter flush there, after 15 miles on the highway I saw this huge flume of black smoke and my windshield covered with oil! The tranny pan gasket blew out! Sure they stepped up and had it towed back to shop the next day and fixed free of charge. I still do a lot of PM on my MBs that are easy with parts from the internet, to save money but MBI is still viable for more serious work in my book. Oh they repainted the shop floor making it really nice when you pull in. I think in the internet age we the customers can finally have the power to effect positive changes with the service we receive and pay for by shopping and sharing our experiences so we will not be made fools anymore.
