I'm another customer of Michel Miro's, Exclusive Motors, off Miramar Road in San Diego. He's taken good care of my MBz for about 15 years. He takes great care in explaining your options, then does the work and takes care to show you old parts and explain how the repair went. Of course people will do the work cheaper, but I trust Michel.
As to fixing that a/c, I'm afraid it sounds like a leaky condenser… do you see a red drip under the car? Michel would know better, but if it is you probably want his 4/60 repair. Roll down four windows and drive sixty. The repair is not only too expensive for the value of the car, but involves taking the car apart from the inside and all those little plastic parts around your dashboard will never fit right again, no matter who does it.

Anyone know of a shop that will service older R12 A/C systems? Preferably in north county.

As far as I know, a/c shops are only allowed to repair R12 systems, not service.
If the under dash evaporator has gone bad, it could take thousands to fix.
There are too many unscrupulous shops out there.

Popov installed a remanufactured starter in my 83 MB 300 CDT.
Price was right and I waited while he installed.

Hans Gietz has been around for years I am pretty sure they are a authorized Mecedez Benz dealer. ON another note I went by Barons to have him work on my 2012 CLS 4 Matic and he did nice work on my brakes with upgraded ceramic pads and no charge but when I got the car back the white Ivory seats had grease on it. THe lady that was there tried to clean it and smeared it all over with some cleaner. Im having my detail guy come clean it I hope he can.

For older Mercedes (pre-1995) I cannot recommend anyone more highly than the folks at Onager Corporation in Chula Vista. Owner Bob Gunthorp is a former Mercedes dealer service manager, who has a personal collection of over a dozen rare cars (including coachbuilt wagons, a 6.3, and an ambulance and a hearse). Mechanic Pete Brown has 40 years experience with a broad range of cars. I would not be using my '69 280S and '60 190Db wagon as regular drivers if it weren't for these guys. In addition to everything else, they have a bunch of parts cars out back and an attic full of used parts, and experienced and knowledgeable parts man Dennis Reamer knows what will fit what. They also have good prices on new mechanical parts and there are always a few cars for sale.

Hey guys, long time lurker, first time poster (first time car owner as well).

I was recently Craigslist bamboozled into a '95 C220 that needs a lot of work I didn't expect to (and don't reallllly want to) pay for. A MB stealership estimated close to $4k worth, not including various interior issues (dash lights and speakers). I'm still not sure how I want to handle everything but would at least like to start with the engine/trans mounts and wiring harne$$ and hopefully get the Check Engine light to go away (it didn't pop up until after the purchase, of course).

Would it be best to call around with my list of repair estimates to see who's more "affordable"? From what I've read in these forums, it looks to be between Minksy (which is five minutes from work) and South Bay (a few minutes from home) for me.

Does anyone know, of hand, which place would be best for my situation?

EDIT: Oh, I forgot a question. I've read in other threads about buying wiring harnesses (and other parts) and taking them to shops, rather than paying for the shops to get them?

Welcome to the forum. You should post in W202, the correct forum for your car.

Southbay will be able to diagnose the problems and not charge dealer rates. Not pushy either.
