I let Brown Motor Works (who started with BMWs but now do MBs, too) do all my routine stuff, and they're very good for that, having done fine work and saved me a great deal of money.
For any major repair, milestone, or pre-purchase inpsection, however, I make the drive all the way from Columbia down to Bluffton (just before HHI, if the name isn't familiar) to see a fine German fellow named Frieder Kemmann at his shop Import Service of the Lowcountry.
He worked for M-B in Germany before he had his own shop in Chicago, and naturally has now set up shop in warmer surroundings. He always has newer, higher-end AMGs in and out of the shop (which I take as a vote of confidence from discerning owners who are likely able to pay dealership prices anyway), and he's one of the few Mercedes mechanics known for knowing his way around G-wagens (even my Europa-imported 1999 model). People from as far as Spartanburg make a trip of it to let Frieder take care of their G-Klasse.
Europa Geländewagen - takes "unlike any other" to another level.
