Great customer service and great selection. I've used them several times now and had great experiences each time.

The newest MB I've seen him working on is a late production W124, though he may work on models newer than that. You'll have to inquire to be sure.

Ya.he is the Godfather of M-B in Houston. The other Techs go to him for a knowledge base. He also does a top flight job rebuilding classic parts. And yes he is getting tired.

Helmut is still working hard

I'm not sure about the old posts about Helmut Holder being "tired" and letting his staff do the work. He is addressing a cracked head and collateral cylinder damage on my 300SDL and today he showed me a driver head he machined to be able to press out the damaged cylinder sleeves... he's an old school craftsman of the first order (you should see some of his scratch-built radio-controlled helicopters).

I know of Hunt's Automotive on HWY 3 in Webster. They have been around a long time but I would need to check their website for updated consumer reports. Then, there is a Mercedes Mechanic in League City. He is located on 518 (Main Street), East of Hwy 3. I will see if I can locate the name of his shop. He does exceptional work and has a four or five bay mechanics shop. I am in Clear Lake as well. - Michael

RIP Helmut Holder

I was visiting a friend last night that was grade-school friends with one of Helmut Holder's sons and my friend told me that Helmut had passed in the past day or two (I searched but didn't find an obit) since he knew that Helmut had recently repaired/rebuilt my 300SDL motor. I called Andy (or Helmut Jr., another son, who works at the shop) and expressed my condolences. Andy said a funeral wasn't planned, but that a celebration of Helmut's life was going to be held on Saturday, August 16th at 11 AM at Miller Funeral Services off the Southwest Freeway (59) at Beechnut. Hopefully some of the Houston-based classic Benz aficionados can find the time to pay their respects to this legend of a man.

Andy also said that his step-mom plans on closing/liquidating the shop, which is a shame.

While I only knew Helmut for a short time, I really liked and appreciated his old school "fix it" mentality instead of the current (and all too common) "parts swappers" that call themselves mechanics. His mind was still sharp as a tack and he worked at the shop daily in spite of his age (86); he also had some of the biggest/strongest hands of anyone I've ever known. As noted previously in another of my posts, Helmut was also an avid RC-Helicopter builder/pilot, who won national awards for his scratch-built helicopters (they were still in his shop and are amazing pieces of mechanical art). Helmut also had a small single cylinder engine that he built/machined using scrap metal he found after WW2... cool stuff!
