Body Shop

I took my 1991 300E to Prestige Autobody on 3rd Avenue and 13th Street. They did a great job and turned it around in three days for me. The owner, Sean, is an honest guy and he quoted me a price that was about 75% cheaper than anyone else. I will be bringing him my SL when I finally have it re-sprayed.

No affiliation here but I was seriously impressed by the quality of work.

Can I bring non-OEM parts

I've known about Kraft for (over 10)yrs, so they must be doing somthing right to still be around. I will def. check him out for some pending work; my only question is do Kraft (or any of the other repair facilities) frown upon bringing your own (non-OEM) parts? I often take better quality/better performance parts to my mechanics, and hope they are mod-friendly.

Thanks for any suggestions, D

Recently had my car in to Kraft for service. Car is running well but I definitely paid top dollar for what I got. I'm going to Try Gene's German Car in Queens next. I'll report back soon.

AMGTestDriver: have you gone to Gene's German Car yet? I'm thinking of going to him as well. He gave me a written estimate that seemed pretty reasonable, esp. compared to the other shops. Also, he had another 560sl in the shop when I went there, and other Benzes of various vintages.

I used Kraft to go over my '91 300SE W126 after purchasing it and do a proper service. I was quite impressed by the owner's thorough analysis and testing of all parts of the car. He clearly knows these cars inside-out.

He did find a substantial amount of things that needed to be replaced/fixed - things like two brake rotors that had seized up (both rear wheels so I couldn't tell when testing - and this car stops amazingly with front only apparently), various bushings, engine mounts, engine seals, control arms etc. - it was a very hefty bill of several thousand. I was a little shocked and went through it in detail, comparing part prices etc. - and I couldn't fault them for their part prices, they were very close / identical to Pelican parts etc.. They also try to use refurbished pieces where possible.

The owner was also forthcoming in suggesting a few things that could be attended to a paycheck or two later.

What does drive up the cost is the relatively higher labour costs, but then you do pay for the expertise this shop has.

That being said, I'm curious to try Gene's German Car and will probably have him look over my new-to-me 300SL when something comes up that needs attention. Has anyone used him for a W126 or a R107?

I did take in my R107 because he was recommended by a Benzworld member. His prices are the best; he also had a 560sl in the shop when I drove in. (He noticed right away that I didn't have the right windshield wipers and pointed out the OEM ones on the other car.) I got a very reasonable written estimate from him for a whole slate of work: for a comparison, he said full service of the transmission would be $190.

Actually, it would be great to get feedback on the estimate. I will soon be taking the car back to Gene. Do these prices seem reasonable?

I'm not sure it's a good comparison, as I only used Kraft for a W126 300SE so far, but the transmission service seems to be the same cost.
