I have had real good luck with an independent named Roland Schmidt, who used to have his own shop but now since he's nearing retirement has been working out of Montgomery Autohaus in Rockville, near the Metro. Warning: Roland is old, cranky and very German, but has 60 years experience with MB. I have seen local dealerships bring cars to him for problem solution. And there are a couple of really great techs associated with dealerships I have had positive experiences with: John Heflin (frequent poster here and region MB Club Prez I think) and Joseph Howard. I won't post their associations but will share their contact info if I am PM'd. I have found over the years when it comes to fixing my Benzes, sometimes one has to just bite the bullet and pay someone who knows more than you...

Roland is a good guy, he helped me out greatly once by storing my car in his shop for over 3 months. I was just a young tot back then but I still have fond memories of the old man and his shop.

His wife's not doing well and he had some problems with his landlord who was the guy two shops over. I'm sure those contributed to his decision to close the place. He looked well a few months back. I'll never forget watching him change my blower motor. The tricks and twists he knew to get at that thing out and reassemble it were amazing. I felt like I was watching a true artist (although one who bitched out loud a lot about his work!). Hope he stays at it a while longer.

I hope his situation improves. It's got to be at least 10 yrs since I last paid him a visit but I won't forget the old shop, it always had a couple of mint diesels in there waiting his magic touch.

When you see him next tell him Hank with the little red Honda that sat in his shop for 3+ month says Hi!

Germantown - MD Need an solid indep. Mech.

I read the write about Roland Schmidt. Will certainly try him. Does anyone know any other independant MB mechanic in the MD/DC area (for 2001 S500)?

Interesting. RC was Roland's landlord, two shops down... Actually, all the guys in the shop where he works now, Montgomery Autohaus seem good. I know a Benz tech or two who do some things on the side. PM me

Autobahn Service Center on Nebel St. in Rockville

Autobahn Service Center has been working on my cars for the past 20 years. Their work has always been oustanding and reasonably priced. I have recommended them to several friends/colleagues and all have become long term customers.

Repeat of post in D.C. section:

So, does this mean that RC is or is not recommended. Or, other than what ever issues they might have had, is the RC shop good for MB service?

thanks

I posted this in the DC forum but for us southerners...

I took my car to Montgomery Autohaus to get the timing chain done and I think they did a good job on it. The car runs much smoother now.

HOWEVER, we also had a issue with a rattling from the under the car and asked them to check it out. We expected a exhaust mount or something easy.

They tell us our catalytic converter is cracked and causing the rattle. Gave us a @$3000 estimate for the part and service.

A week later we take it to another shop for another reason and while under the car they notice one of the exhaust hangers was broken, fixed it for free, and the rattle went away.

I didn't verify if the cat was actually cracked or not but the rattle went away and that's what i wanted fixed originally.

Very shady! I won't be back.
