Just purchased a new gas powered 2005 Smart Fortwo. Can any owners here in the U.S. tell me your average gas consumption or range per tank? I seem to be getting 40 MPG at the most with A/C and I'm still trying to learn the car. The recommended RPM ranges especially on the higher gears cause the car to sound like it's lugging. Is it lugging or not? Any response would be appreciated.
I have a SMART Passion with about 1,300 miles of city driving in Los Angeles.
I am getting between 22 and 25 mpg. The SMART rep says mileage will improve with time. I don't get the logic how mpg improves with more miles driven. It's a huge disappointment and certainly does not reflect the mpg promised in the literature. I'll take it to MB to have it checked. If the mpg does not improve I'll get rid of it, as much as I love this car, and get a Prius.

I think they are saying that as the car breaks in, mileage will improve. Maybe you need to put about 5000 miles on the car and recheck the mileage then.

As the motor "breaks in" and becomes looser componants can move more easily. Perfect example is my new motorcycle, went from 46MPG to 53MPG in a 3 thousand miles.
That is unreal, I could not do that bad with my B-Class driving flat out on a racetrack. You have a major engine issue, unless you drive 1 mile at a time.
Mine has averaged over 60 US MPG for more than 60,000 miles, it's a diesel.
I am now at 2,500 miles, and the mileage of my SMART Passion went down, around 21 mpg, can't get above 22 mpg, city driving, not during rush hour, normal traffic.
MB checked the engine and said they can't find anything wrong with it. How do you get appr. 40 mpg? Only highway driving?
OK I wrang the hell out of the car in this tank and got 29MPG, I have no idea what you are doing to get that low of a MPG. I would take it to another smart center.
Is that one of the 450 Smart Cars that a company in the Seattle area is importing from Canada? They are brand new 2005's, right? Also, they have a 700cc motor instead of the 1,000cc motor in the U.S. spec 451 Smarts. If that's it, maybe you should check the Canadian Smart forum - Club smart car
