WTB: Looking for my old Benz. Father/Son rebuild

I hope someone will have some information for me.

I'm looking for a White 1974 240d with blue interior and a sunroof. This vehicle was sold in the Clinton, TN area back in '93-'94. When purchased there was about a 3-4" hole in the hat rack and possibly 2 or 3 "axe" marks in the truck lid beside the lock. It was broken into...long story. Aftermarket Pioneer stereo (or Alpine, can't remember). If memory serve me correct, I believe either the radiator was bad, or the transmission quit. I was in college at the time and my dad handled the selling.

This was a project that my dad and I worked on back in High School. It is really the only thing I would have to remember our time together. We purchased it in Memphis, TN. Someone had redlined the engine. Him and I pulled the engine together and rebuilt it. He was a Mercedes Tech at the time, so this was nothing difficult for either of us. I have a lot of memories with this car, including my High School graduation.
All of the records my dad had of this car have been lost. So I don't have a VIN. Just a detailed description.

If anyone knows of or has any idea of such a car in your area, either present or past. PLEASE let me know. I would love to have this back as a memory of my dad.

Thanks!

Have you considered going to your DMV and doing a records request for the title or registration? At least that way you might be able to find the VIN. Once you have the VIN you should be able to track it down.

I briefly inquired (online) about a records search. But the form was asking for the VIN. That's what I'm trying to track down. Maybe there's a different approach or another form/department I should look for?

Any other direction is greatly appreciated.

Thanks LWB250!

I would visit the DMV in person with a copy of his death certificate and ask very nicely about how you might go about searching the records based on his name.

I know in Florida it can be done through a public records request.

Your insurance company at the time would have the VIN, if they have not purged that data yet.

Do you have any pictures? I looked around a bit yesterday when I read your post. But did not see any with the description you gave.

LOL, it was registered in AL at the time of ownership. My dad lived in Memphis, I lived in AL. Insurance wasn't required at the time. So not insured. But now that I think about it I have old photos of it somewhere at my mom's house. Maybe one of them has the tag number?

Thanks Michael!

I'm in the beginning stages of this so I'll have everything together eventually.

Thanks Everyone! Even those reading this and not replying. Any info and spread word is greatly appreciated.

I'm in Mobile but haven't seen any 240s that fit the description.

I'm with Dan, the most efficient/easiest way is to visit the DMV and "chat up" an employee. You should be able to retrieve the VIN. And if not, don't be afraid to politely ask for the supervisor!
