FS in CA: 1984 2.3-16 grey market, cool history!
I have been lucky enough to have gotten one of my dream cars about 9 months ago, but I'm getting married soon and could really use the money!
I am the 3rd owner of a very special 1984 2.3-16. This car was brought over from Germany in 1985 by Robert Graham, one of the founders of Intel and has lived in northern CA ever since. I have all of the old service records, books and almost all of the paperwork from day 1. This car still has the old CA blue plates with "NVLS" as the plates (he was CEO of Novellus micro systems after intel).
The 2nd owner bought this vehicle from Mr. Graham's son and maintained it very well. He recently restored the rear self leveling suspension and got it tuned up to par. Mechanically very well maintained. Car shifts very precisely and smooth throughout all the gears.
Exterior is in great shape. Being 32 years old, it has some flaws, but they are small. There is a small crack in the front bumper, about 2 inches, right where the euro plate would go. Also, there is a door ding on the rear drivers side door, as well as a very small ding on the front grill (which I didn't notice for a few weeks after buying, its small). Besides a few little chips here and there, a good detail will have this car looking almost brand new. No peeling on clear coat or anything like that.
Interior is also in great shape. A few cracks on the dash are present, but all of the trim looks great. There is a tear on the rear seats, but it's along the seam so it looks like it just became separates. Looks like an upholstery shop could easily sew it back up. Overall, very clean (even has a car phone!).
It does have an aftermarket stereo with will work off and on, but I only drive the car around town, so I haven't been messing with it. It works, but maybe 25% of the time. It's a tape deck, you'd probably want a new stereo anyhow.
Most of the other electronics work great. All gauges work including the lap timer. Windows all work fine, however, the rear drivers side can be a bit slow to roll up. When unlocking from the trunk, usually only 2-3/4 doors will unlock. Sometimes all 4, but usually on a warm day! The drivers always unlocks though. The lights for the cluster work, but there is a fuse for them that tends to go out semi easily. PO said to change it every 6 months or so. Went out recently, but haven't driven at night so never replaced it.
Car starts right up and drives great every time. If its cold and hasn't been started in a while, when starting, you'll have to slightly hold the gas pedal to 1000-1500 RPM for 30-60 seconds, then it's good to go.
Overall, I'd say its almost perfect. It's really a blast to drive and the long sweeping corners are the best to really feel that suspension at work.
Now, the car is in CA, however, I would PREFER to sell to someone out of state. This car, being from Germany, didn't have cats like they do in the US. Also, it has about 20 or so more HP than the cossies that came to the US a few years later. The PO had added a cat to make it pass smog and register it. With these grey market cars in CA, you need a smog referee to look over and make sure everything was done to CA spec. Now, being that this car never had that cat, the PO told me that after it's smogged, it's way better sounding and even a bit faster once you take the cats out. I left them on, but have had a terrible time trying to get anyone to attempt to smog it. I went to the smog referee, but to make this car pass smog in my county, I'd have to get NEW cats and whatnot JUST to make it pass, and I am not willing to get too involved, especially that I shouldn't be spending money on car related things at this point in my life.
In most states, the car is old enough where you wouldn't have to worry about emissions anymore, and you can remove the cats and really enjoy the car for what it is. If you are in CA, I'll still sell it to you, however, I will not get it smogged and will sell with the non-op status on the title.
I've always wanted one of these cars, and over the years have come across very few, and none were as clean as this one (well, besides the 25K+ MINT ones). I am looking for $11,000 OBO. for a fairly quick sale. I shipped my previous car from NJ for about $1100 so it's not that expensive if you live far away.
Clear CA title, but will switch to NON-OP when selling since wont pass smog
