There is a 1992 500E for sale in New York City: the seller is asking $10,000.
1992 w124 Mercedes-Benz 500e v8 5.0
I did a cursory exam of the car. Driver's side paint was redone due to excessive wear. CEL is on but the car did not respond to XENTRY diagnostic through its proprietary connector. Will do a blinker code analysis later. Will evaluate suspension, body, drive train and electrical system later. Shows a new upper harness but did not check for lower harness. No power steering hose leak. Aux fan and A/C appear to be working. Transmission is okay. Motor mounts, ball joints, tie rod ends and steering damper appear okay. Brake fluid, rotors and pads appear okay. Cooling system is okay and all dozen coolant hoses are okay. Seller replaced the center caps with chrome originals.
This is the hand built model by Porsche free of rust, straight and sitting correctly. Many new parts and many old, broken parts are throughout the car (new distributor caps and rotors but old, broken oil dipstick, for example). Trunk is okay. Interior wood is not bad but the seats need to be re-skinned and carpets are filthy. Unclear what emissions part is causing the CEL or if the engine is burning oil and fouling its spark plugs. Numerous controls are okay but some need replacement. Bulbs are mostly working.
Starts very quickly and idles smoothly with a sonorous exhaust tone not a leak. No smell of fuel and no smoking at all. Doors are good, pillars are correct and original. Front end had a minor collision.
I am not the seller, only an interested buyer. However, if someone here is ready to buy the car, I'll step aside and help with diagnosis and error spotting. I have so many cars already.
