I do estate sales and come across cars left sitting in garages for years all the time. in fact my 88 420sel came out of an estate after sitting 9 years.
This car sat inside with the hardtop on for 7 years and then outside with the hardtop on for 2 more years. it came from the 2nd owner and was a Chicago car most of its life so it has body panel rust. fuel system has been flushed out and a new battery, cap plugs wires and the car starts and engine runs pretty well.it was idling high so I cleaned out the slider and it settled down but it still has a minor vacuum leak that I cannot find/isn't obvious.
the trans shifts well and the only leak seems to be power steering front seal. car has 180k miles. tires have been sitting for at least 9 years and are cracked. one exhaust pipe is loose at the flange for the rear muffler so it is loud.
but she starts, runs drives ok,doesnt overheat. interior is worn, dash cracked, seats worn out. convertible top is like new but it was stored down for years and is very tight to put up, but it is up. the hardtop is nice, no rust, needs a buffing to shine again. oddly the rust seems to be body panel, the pans and the frames are solid.
I live near O'Hare and am asking $2200.00 or best offer, if you mention this forum I can cut you a deal. I have 7 cars and only took this one because it came with the estate. if it doesn't sell I will probably part it out. it seems a shame to dismantle what could be a nice daily driver for someone
