NEED HELP WITH HIGH IDLE

I have a 1984 380SL and my mechanic is stumped. When my car is cold the idle is fine, but after it warms up the idle gets higher on its own. It doesn't come down. The mechanic says running the car at high idle will damage the transmission. Does anyone know how to fix this?
