FS 1981 Mercedes Benz 240D

For sale is an ivory/tan 1981 240D. 103,000 miles.

I bought this last October 2013 in hopes to put B100 fuel in it, that was produced at a local university (Northwesterns biofuel program). I got pregnant right after I bought it and couldn't make the drives to get the fuel - it is about an hour away and I could no longer haul a tub, so it never tasted a drop of it.

We kept her in a garage last winter too - not heated.

Now I am looking to sell this lovely car for a hatchback as that will better suit our growing families needs.

So this car was purchased from a little old lady who took meticulous care of the car and kept it in a heated garage its whole life. It has minimal rust spots and drove like a dream. When I got it, I replaced the break system and got the fuel filters cleaned and gave her an oil change. Since then, we replaced the head gasket and a tube for the coolant that was eroded.

The ac, heat and radio all work. The locks are vacuum locks. They close when you turn the drivers key, but when they open you have to open them manually. This happened when we got her and just happens every so often. The interiors is GORGEOUS. I want to say flawless except for the floor mats are so old and unraveling a bit around the edges.

When I had the head gasket replaced it was because the car was idling after I would turn the car off. It fixed the problem at first, but the car still idles 5-10 seconds now after I turn off the car. This has never posed a problem, I just don't want it to happen.

There are a few cosmetic things - a couple rust spots (pictured), a small bubbling (pictured), a small dent (pictured - a little old lady backed into it), and a the left head light needs a new shield.

As far as big picture the car needs I know of none, but our mechanic said regular maitenence will be needed just because she is older.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I really want this lovely vehicle to go to a home that will love her like I do.

I really don't want to part with her, but with the kiddo we want to take more road trips so want something we can pile stuff in.

I would like to get 5k for her. I can help coordinate shipping if necessary.

You had the headgasket replaced because the car wouldn't turn off? That is a vacuum issue and is more then likely do to the vacuum lock system. All you have to do is plug the vacuum line until the locks are fixed...and it should turn off...

FWIW rust is a big big stake in the heart on these cars, that one has way to much cancer for the price..

You are very optimistic with the price considering the condition. The rust is the main issue, and from the pictures I'm willing to bet the driver door bottom is nasty, too.

While the lower mileage is nice, these cars really thrive on being run, and I would rather have a pristine example with 200k than a rusty one with 100k. That's the way the market works for these, or so I've found, so you might want to reconsider the price.

I would say that this is a $2,000 car on a good day. Definitely less if the rust is worse than it appears, and I suspect it is.

Working AC is a big plus. The headgasket because of car not shutting off is complete bunk. Diesel mercedes don't shut off because of a vacuum leak. The same reason that the door locks don't work right. I think someone took you for a ride and it wasn't nice of them. The rust is a big problem. GLWS.
