I ordered a few tubes of the green MB wheel bearing grease

MB approval 265.1

Not much room for profit but I can do $7.50 a tube.

Priority 2 day is $5.95

2 tubes is plenty for a thorough repack

1 tube, $13.45 shipped

2 tubes $20 shipped

Depends on the model.

My 400E is 70 gr per side by the book (WIS). So 140 gr total

I've seen 55, and 60 gr per side on other models, those you'd be safe with 1 tube

But I like to use extra grease in the cavity between the bearings
so I use a tube and a half on my car & customer cars at the shop

Thanks Clark. I was always under the impression that too much grease is nearly as bad as not enough grease. I have been told that too much grease inhibits the ability of the grease to flow and lubricate properly. You would have a whole lot more experience than I on that issue though. Ever have any issues with bearings after adding the extra? Do you set the bearings with a dial indicator? Curious on both questions.

I think you misunderstand "how much" extra I'm talking about

Maybe 20 grams per side ??

I go by what the inside of the hubs looked like when I took these cars apart new

The hubs were pretty much filled, to match what I pushed out with a rag
takes a "little" more then spec

But if your paranoid, use a cheap food scale and weigh out the amount
your chassis calls for.

And no, in 30 years working for MB, I never saw a problem with my method
which pretty much every tech in the dealer used as well

In fact, the veteran shop foreman that mentored me when started showed
me that method back in the early 80's.

As far as "not enough room for the grease "to flow"............

If your familiar with boat trailers, they have bearing caps with grease zerks
called "bearing buddy's"

You pump grease into the hub/bearings until it comes out the inner seal

I'd say that hub is 100% full of grease, what do you think about "too much grease" now ??

Thanks again Clark - always good to get as much info as I can from someone who has done lots of them. I've only done a few wheel bearing repacks and always just went with what the manual says. That's why I like the 150g tube. You can get very close to the right amounts by squeezing out about 140 grams, then dividing that in half to get the 70 grams needed for each side.
