I have no inside info on the car itself, but the engines are available for under $1,000, so it's not inconceivable that the engine was replaced.

I was going to guess that someone local bought the car prior to the ebay sale and did something with it. The seller would probably have no benefit of mentioning the engine work (other than karma benefits one gets from being honest and forthcoming). The reason I was willing to bet that the car was purchased is because the ebay ad shows a Delaware tag and the OP has PA in his profile and I think the service indicators on the door show Lancaster, PA. But then the car could have been registered at a second home in Delaware, like maybe a beach house. The fact that the same seller was selling a damaged m3 engine head seems too coincidental.
But clearly that seller is experienced with eBay.

The mid-teens pricing estimates seemed to be dead on. I've recently started following r129, and I believe the 1996-1998 are apparently the best years, with the 1998 being the best with the m119 and cup holders too.
I've got a 1992 500sl and it has been a lot of fun for the money. These cars are currently some great cheap fun. My BIL was going to by mine but it still had too many issues when he wanted to buy, so I found him a 1998 sl500 with ~50,000 miles for $10,000 with an extra set of wheels worth maybe $1200-1500. There are awesome values to be had in r129 cars right now. 107s are starting to appreciate with w113 becoming unobtanium for the common man.

Someone should be very happy with a 3500 mile car that runs well for $15,000. The interior and cosmetic repairs for higher mile r129 cars can get expensive.
