Not nitpicking at all, genuinely curious as I might be interested in this wagon. But at 4K I would want to know everything that has been asked and that I have asked already.

The color inside that tank looks like the result of oil (or ATF) mixed in the coolant. Or, the color that results from using copper-colored leak sealant like K&W Block Seal. That's why I'd want to look inside, and get a better photo. Not saying the car isn't worth it, but I'd sure want to know about an issue like that BEFORE purchase, not after.

If it had ASR and heated seats I'd be sorely tempted. I love that color. It looks sharp inside & out. GLWS!

Exactly. When my 300E blew its head gasket the tank turned a nice yellow/brown color. What concerns me with the tank in this car is it looks new on the outside, but brown on the inside. The "needs a coolant flush" part is also a red flag for me, because why wouldn't this have been done just recently with a full head gasket service?

I would like to go look at it, but I want some answers to these questions before driving an hour to go see it.

Question

Gentlemen, what CSI/NSA (renamed Stasi) technology are you using to see the coolant color? I can't determine coolant level, let alone color. Or am I missing a picture?

With a new coolant reservoir, it should look like this. Clear top, yellow (OE) coolant visible in the lower section.

An original, mid-1990's tank is typically a yellow/gold color, as seen here.

This teal wagon appears to have a newer tank but the entire inside of it appears to be a brown-ish color, which is unusual. It looks different than either of the links above, which is why additional info would be helpful. A couple photos is all it takes...

Question

Brownish tank could have been stained due to engine condition prior to cylinder-head (and gasket) work mentioned (my current M104 parts car suffers this, coolant is mud). Still cannot see coolant color, only tank color. If OP advertises here then response to information requests above are needed to sell it here. If local, I'd see for myself but without information its tough to fly blind due the distance involved.

That would be a plausible explanation. Again, some photos of the inside of the tank would be helpful.

Very sorry to have missed all these replies!!! I've somehow had ZERO notifications from the forum & hadn't thought to check over the holidays. . .

RE: the expansion tank, the car had water in the cooling system when I bought it as the cylinder head gasket was failed between the cooling jacket & the #2 combustion chamber (result of a botched aftermarket head gasket repair at some point in its past, plenty more details on this for anyone seriously interested). That said, the color is quite normal for an original MB tank of this age - if it looks otherwise, it may be due to the lighting/wb in my pictures.

I'm a certified Porsche & BMW tech & have a long history owning & working on these cars both personally & professionally. This is a great example, but obviously not a low-mile creampuff. I can go into exhaustive detail for anyone who is a potential buyer - please contact me directly & I will be more than happy to provide any info you could want.

I'm at work right now, but will get more pix & details as requested in all earlier posts. Again, VERY sorry for the lack of response!!!

I must disagree about the color being normal for this age. And as for the lighting, it would have also effected the windshield washer tank appearance. That is typically seen as a result of oil contamination, probably related to why the cylinder head had to be done. I am NOT saying that it is still a problem, if the cylinder head was done correctly.

You should address all the questions in this thread. That way everyone can see your answers. No need to repeat them to each person who contacts you in private. Especially about the wiring harness and ETA, as that is an expensive replacement.

I have several wiring harnesses (E300/320 and E400/420), ETA's, side/tail/headlights and trim for sale. I can also get requested parts from local JYs. PM me.
