Possible W108 4.5 part out S. California

Car SOLD 12/15/2013

I just bought a 1973 (really 1972) 280 SEL 4.5 because it has parts I want off of it. My intention was to get the radio and rear reading lights and a few other things and then take it to the junkyard. Seller said it didn't have brakes and only shifted into 1st gear. As it turns out, the brakes work and leak and pull to the left so I suspect the right front caliper, and the transmission shifts correctly through all three forward gears. I had it up to 75 for a 28 mile drive home. It does NOT shift into reverse, which I understand from Sun Valley Mercedes is a $250 fix.

The car is a major cosmetic fixer. LOTS of surface rust but it appears not to have the typical rust on the doors, rockers, under windshields, trunk floor. What it seems is that it has gobs of surface rust on the hood, roof, and trunk lids.

So the car is better than I was expecting. I'm wondering if should take a few things that I want and then drive it to the junkyard and get $500 for it, or if others want the engine/transmission. The engine pulls strong and has good oil pressure. The transmission shifts well (except no reverse). I know that there is also some interest in the rear axle of the car due to the gear ratio.

So is there interest on the forum of buying any of the big items that would prevent me from junking it?

thanks
Scott

Update on the car...
I cleaned out the car and trunk today and there were some surprises. Most importantly, there isn't rust. None in the trunk, none under the carpets. There is GOBS of surface rust on the hood, roof, and trunk lid but nothing that won't sand off. So it's odd that I have this car that is basically not rusty and basically has a good running 4.5 engine and transmission (that doesn't go into R) and differential. I think it's an ideal parts car for someone who wants an engine. It's registered and insured and I have a set of Bundt wheels that I could put on with decent tires such that it could be driven to a destination. I have driven it about 30 miles on the freeway up to about 75 on the dreadful ancient tires that it currently has on the steel wheels. I won't be doing that again. I'm going to re-post as a car for sale in hopes that someone can use the whole thing. Interior is poor although the back seat cleaned up, as did the red carpets in back and front passenger. Nothing for the driver carpet. Front seats are trash.

I'm so happy to hear that this thing's not going to the junker! I hope it sells quickly to someone who loves it.

With its present appearance they will have to grow to love it. Actually, they can love the inside of the trunk right now! It's beautiful. I don't want it to go to the junkyard because the engine might not be utilized. The junkyard I would take it to _would_ have someone that would remove the rear axle. The have a special old car day and advertise in advance so the parts would be utilized. But I would doubt that anyone would pull the engine. Instead someone would take the injectors, etc not knowing that it runs well...
