I had an eBay seller do this to me about 5 years ago when I purchased a 1995 E320 wagon which I still own. The reserve was not met on the eBay auction and I emailed the seller to inquire how much money it would take to sell the car. He told me he would sell it to me for only a couple hundred more than the current high bid which I agreed to. I mailed him a check and had a transport company pick up the car. Five years later I am still trying to repair problems like an ASR light that will not go out after doing the head gasket, engine wire harness, ETA, brakes, new tires, etc.
The moral of the story is that you have no recourse if you purchase something outside of eBay and not pay for it via Paypal and the seller retains his/her stellar feedback.
Which reminds me - stay away from RoverClassics/SaabClassics on eBay - every vehicle listed informs the buyer that it qualifies for a $550 "discount" if you buy the vehicle outside of eBay. If you send the seller a $500 deposit it is gone forever if you change your mind about the vehicle.
