Short story: looking for a 1982 (give or take a few years) turbo diesel. Preferably pale yellow exterior with tan interior. Extra points for seat backs that have leather pockets instead of the standard webbing.
Long story: the first Mercedes my dad owned was a pale yellow 1982 300D. One morning, while driving my brother to school in it, I hit a patch of black ice, slid down a hill and hit a utility truck. The wreck wasn't that bad, but they totaled the car due to its low book value and refused to let my dad buy it back. It only had about 267,000 miles on it at the time, the vast majority of which my dad had put on it over the previous 10 years. So I wrote him an IOU for "One 1982 300D."
That was 15 years ago. I recently moved back to my hometown from DC and finally have a garage for a car, but no car since I used to take the subway to work. Even though I have some serious lust in my heart for a tricked-out C300 at the local dealership, I have decided to buy a 1982 (or similar year) 300D turbo diesel, fix it up/clean it up to the extent necessary, and give it to my dad for his birthday.
So I'm looking for a W123 (I believe its a W123.133) 300D Turbo diesel. My dad's was pale yellow with tan interior and what I call the standard wheels (I've seen them called 15 slot or 15 hole wheels). Also, something I've never seen on another W123, instead of the black string webbing behind the driver and passenger seats, his had leather pockets. I am trying to find a car that (1) I can use as a daily driver for a few months until I give it to my dad (and talk the dealer down on that C300) and (2) matches my dad's car as closely as possible. I know these cars are tanks, so high mileage doesn't scare me, neither does some light work or minor cosmetic issues (I'm not that handy, but can make some minor repairs/detail the thing).
I know it's a stretch, but if anyone has a 300D and they'd like it to get babied for the foreseeable future, please let me know.
