Auction car, why would it go to auction unless there are undisclosed issues even your friend isn't aware of.
That's a lot of miles with no service history, I wouldn't think auction cars in general are normally serviced correctly when they are supposed too. A PPI is mandatory and make sure it's a good shop that is very picky, even then.
Don't let the purchase price suck you in, all 129's will need $$$ over the years to keep them going, and your prospect is no different, perhaps even worse than normal..
You don't need a rebuilt tranny bill while your still paying off the $9000, it's possible though. The 99's came from the factory with permanant fluid, which was changed by Mercedes with a service bulliten. My indy said the permanant fluid was nonsence, and should have been an every 60K change out. That means the SL your looking at should be on it's second tranny fluid change, and it's actually a 3rd of the way till the 3rd change.
I'd bet it's original factory fluid in that tranny right now...
My 99 sport is the best car I've owned. I love to drive it, and with winter coming soon, only so many days till it gets stored for the winter, today was another top down day...
Which is another normal issue, when were the top hydralic cylinders last serviced or replaced, when was the hydralic fluid last replaced? If they haven't been replaced yet, think about it...$$$
Go spend a bunch or time reading about service problems in the 129 forum. It will give you a good idea of what you can expect with this one....
Anyway, good luck hope ya get a nice one
