1979 300CD with 148k original miles. This was my father-in-law's car and it appears to have lived part of it's life in La Mesa, CA based on a service sticker. It certainly didn't go through any Michigan winters as there is no rust on this car. We brought this car to our house from where it was stored about 90 minutes away and I have had a mechanic over working on it a couple of times. Since I got the car, it has had an oil and filter change, had Lucas diesel treatment run through it, run a 1/4 tank of gas through it and had half a tank refill, and brakes fully flushed and bled with new brake hoses on all four corners. It still needs some attention, but the car is mechanically excellent. It starts up without smoking both cold and hot and shuts right off, so it appears the compression is still excellent. The brake pads and rotors have lots of life left. The brake lines, as far as a cursory inspection, are great. Trans fluid was checked as it required about 1/4 of a quart. I added that. About $1000 worth of service and parts to it.
As far as what it still needs:
*Adjustment of the throttle linkage as depressing the gas pedal fully only takes it to about half throttle
*One new tire (running on the spare and it is bald - tread damage to the original); other tires are good
*Needs several exterior bulbs replaced (brake lights are out, backup lights are on, etc)
*Only driver's side window rolls down with auto windows
*Stable crack in windshield
*Cracking in dash vinyl from sun damage
*Needs new carpet
Beyond this, the car is in great shape. I would do more to it, but then I would be inclined to keep it.
Since it is in my father-in-law's trust though, I am getting pressure from my wife's siblings to get it sold. I think $5000 is very fair for as sound as this car is, but we will entertain offers. Car is located in Ann Arbor, MI.
