I believe that the car I am selling is the 1996 C280 (W202) with the lowest mileage of any W202 in the US. The actual mileage is 23,050. This automobile is in very close to new condition. The price I am asking represents a fairly rare opportunity to buy a ‚€œnew‚€Ě old car ‚€“ like one that came out of a time machine. The car was driven from the day it was purchased until sometime in early 2011. It was not driven much, but never sat for any extended period. In the latter years, the owner no longer drove. Her maid did the driving.
I purchased the car in September 2011. The car is in Westchester County NY.
Background: The car was purchase by an 90 pound, 80-year old lady in Scarsdale, NY. The date on the invoice is July 19, 1996. The price of the car was $37,634.90.
She drove it around Westchester County New York and made at least one trip to Florida with it (since it was serviced there as well as locally at the MB dealer in White Plains). She is now 97 years old and no longer drives.
Every year, right as rain, she had the car inspected and serviced. Some repairs were made. Everything is documented. Original receipts.
Last September, after teasing me with the possibility of selling me the car for three years, she finally sold me the car. When I drove it out of her garage - it was always garaged ‚€“ it had 13,800 miles on it. I put in a new battery, and it started right up.
Since then I have put on almost 10,000 miles. I love the car ‚€“ it is a sweet ride, and I get an endless kick out of driving this ‚€œnew‚€Ě car. It is pristine.
It has never been driven on salty roads as the original owner never went out in the snow, and last winter it didn‚€™t snow in the New York area.
Condition: Pretty much like new. The paint is excellent. Obviously, no rust at all. Has two very minor ‚€œdings‚€Ě on the fenders (most likely from the impact of doors of cars parking next to it on its rare trips out). Every other surface is perfect.
The glass is like new. The windshield is perfect.
The interior is showroom. No cracks anywhere on the wood trim pieces. Seats, doorpanels, headliner perfect. The sunroof headliner however is wrinkled a bit.
All seats are like new.
All doors close with a bank vault thud. The rubber is perfect around the doors and other openings.
The engine is smooth and quiet with a nice purr from the original exhaust. It revs easily and smoothly. At cruising speed, the water temperature is right on 80.
Transmission shifts are crisp but smooth.
Brakes are very effective. The car stops ‚€“ period. Smooth and non-fading.
I recently made a 400 mile day trip, and the highway mileage at 75 mph was a solid 27 mpg.
The radio ‚€“ with original antenna ‚€“ works great with the Bose system. Sound is very good. The cassette deck works great. I recorded a few CD‚€™s onto cassettes, and the sound is excellent.
The heating ‚€“ air conditioning system is the automatic type. Just punch in the temperature and the system does the rest. In the winter, I have never had a car get warm in the cabin as quickly, and in these first few summer days, the air conditioning is icy.
Service & Repairs - The cars is up to date on service. The engine oil was changed at 19,500 miles with AMS Oil European with a Mann Oil Filter.
Engine air filter and Cabin air filter are less than 6 months old.
Engine coolant was replaced ‚€“ with a flush ‚€“ at 12,000 miles.
Comes with: Complete tool kit. Owners manual and its original binder. Original-type CD-changer (not installed ‚€“ goes in trunk). One spare wheel for mounting snow tires (not needed). Two remote entry fobs.
What I hope: The car will be purchase by someone who will give it a good home; drive on smooth roads where salt is not present; always garage it, and keep it as original as possible.
I will be happy to provide a full photo album. What is attached here is just a quick taste.
I am asking $15,000.
Why am I selling it? Good question. This car is my business car. My business is antique clock repair. I need to haul around old clocks. The C280 sedan is not well adapted to my needs. Some of the things I need to carry will not fit. I prefer a station wagon. I could be interested in a swap for an E-class station wagon. It has to be nice and relatively low mileage.
