1995 E420 with ASR & heated orthopedic seats

This car is Pearl Black Metallic (paint code 199) with black leather interior. I bought it in California in early 2009, and I'm selling it because we purchased a different Mercedes. The odometer currently reads approx 178kmi. The paint is fair, there are spots on the roof where the clearcoat is starting to degrade (see photos). The car looks a little better in the pictures than it does in person... there are a number of small chips in the paint from the infamous Idaho "seal coat", but there are no major dents or damage. Clean title, clean AutoCheck report (link below), non-smoker.

The interior is very good other than a crack in the driver's seat leather (under the sheepskin cover), and mechanically the car is excellent. Everything works, including the power windows, power locks, power seats, electric sunroof, HVAC system, outside temperature display, gauges, factory Bose 10-speaker stereo system, anti-lock brakes, traction control, heated seats, and cruise control. The car has 3M ColorStable™ window tint all around which keeps the car noticeably cooler in summertime. The AC works and is ice cold in summer, all the vacuum pods which control the dash vent airflow have been tested and are working correctly. Typical measured fuel economy from the 275hp 4.2L V8 engine is around 18-20mpg in town, and 24-25mpg on a long freeway trip, which is very close to the EPA economy ratings of 18 city / 24 highway.

Here is a list of the major service/maintenance done in the last 2,000 miles (approx):
  • New engine mounts
  • New strut mounts
  • New Bosch spark plugs
  • New viscous fan clutch
  • New PBR Deluxe ceramic brake pads front & rear
  • All fluids flushed & filters replaced Feb-2012: oil, air, transmission, coolant, fuel, and brake fluid

This car had an MSRP of about $55k when new (including luxury tax, but NOT including optional equipment), and my car has all options available at that time with the exception of the factory cellular phone. Optional equipment on this car is as follows:
  • Driver & passenger orthopedic seats (code 404)
  • ASR - Automatic Slip Reduction / traction control (code 471)
  • Rear window roller blind (code 544)
  • Driver & passenger heated seats (code 873)
  • Rear seat reading lamps (code 877)

Click here to download the AutoCheck report (PDF file).

Click here to download the the recent engine oil analysis (PDF file) from the last fill of Mobil-1.

Click here to download a Road & Track comparison test report on the 1995 E420 (10MB PDF file).

Click here to view additional photos online, or click here to download a Zip file with all 65 high-res images (8MB total).

Asking $4950, cash only please, no trades.

No lowballers, if you want to spend $3k on a car, please look elsewhere. Most other 400E/E420's do not have traction control or heated seats, these are rare & desireable options. Please keep that in mind when comparing to similar models for sale at lower prices.

If you have any questions, please contact me via email - thank you!

ASR is a negative for most 124.034 buyers, The only benefit
is the ETA's are cheaper.

But good luck with the sale.

I think 124s got cheaper over their lifetime, probably a combination of reduced manufacturing costs and desire to compete with the asian imports

I will never understand people's aversion to ASR. I have driven many tens of thousands of miles in W124's both with and without it, and believe me when I tell you that ASR is an absolute godsend on snow or ice, and even on wet/dirty pavement. It works very, very well. Folks who live in very warm/dry climates would have much less need for ASR; but there's just no downside to having it, regardless of the propaganda spouted on the forums.

My usual response is to mention that you can add an ASR Off switch on the dash to cars with ASR to disable it when desired, but for cars without ASR, it cannot be retrofitted. I have the "ASR Off" switches in both my 500's, but the only time I ever turn it off is to warm up the tires at the dragstrip.

For those who think ASR slows you down on the racetrack.... that was debunked in a 1992 CAR magazine article. A 500E was tested at a racetrack and timed with ASR enabled and disabled, and contrary to popular expectations, the car consistently lapped a couple seconds faster with ASR enabled. Go figure.

Thank you! It really is a nice car... we just have too many right now, and need to thin the herd.

Hey Clarksz71....you need a pretty nice parts car? Have my '93 400E sitting under a cover and doing nothing. We're in the same general area too. Hate to send it to U-Pull-It. Thx!
