Over the time the R 129 "SL" have been built, Daimler Benz replaced in June 98' the Double Twin cam 32 Valve engines oft the M 119 series and the Inline Six's by V 90° 6 and 8 Types with a single cam per bank and three valves per cylinder. {Type M 112 an M 113}.

All the AMG R 129 built types used the same Identification code of the basic Daimler Benz car design.

////AMG INFO:

The "SL 60" was based on the "500 SL" {R 129.066/.067}, a car, originally fitted with an 4.973 cm³ engine {M 119.960/M 119.972/M 119.982}. There have been built three different AMG Versions of the "500 SL", but the major changes are the same.

The original crank was replaced by the crankshaft of the M 117.968 {"560"}, means the stroke was increased to 94.8 mm {3 ¾ in.}. The bore was increased to 100.0 mm { 3.94 in.}, so the engine capacity reached 5.956 cm³. Inlet and Exhaust channels of the cylinder heads were extended and polished. AMG exhausts has been fitted.

"500 SL 6.0 AMG"
First conversion to 6 Litre, based on the R 129.066 fitted with the M 119.960 KE engine.
These with Bosch KE engine control reached 374 hp @ 5.250 rpm and a maximum torque of 550 Nm @ 4.000 rpm.
They used the same Four speed automatic transmission {722.353}, Differential ratio and brakes as the 5 Litre cars. The tires, mounted on three-piece AMG rims {8 ½ x 17 ET 18 -- 10 x 17 ET 17} have a size of 255/40 ZR 17 -- 255/55 ZR 17.
This car have been built between September 91' and August 93'.

"SL 60 AMG
The second series, built between September 93' and December 95' used the M 119.972 LH engine with Bosch LH engine control. Those engines, as those of the "E 60", reached 381 hp @ 5.500 rpm. {580 Nm @ 3.750rpm}. This series still uses the same Front an rear brakes as those fitted on the serial "500 SL", also have been changed to a larger diameter.
The automatic gearbox was replaced by the 722.364, still having 4 Speeds.

The last series was built between have been April 196 and May 98.
Now the M 119.982 with Bosch ME engine control was converted, but the output was unchanged. The gearbox was replaced by the new five speed automatic transmission, rims have had 18" diameter, the size of the tires reached 245/40 ZR 18 -- 275/35 ZR 18.

AMG Aerodynamic Body kit have been fitted to all official converted cars.

Of all series have around 300 cars been built.

The extremely rare SL73 AMG was sold through AMG in 1995, and at 525 bhp (391 kW) it offered the most powerful V12 engine ever put into an SL up to that time. After a brief gap, the SL73 was offered again from 1998 to 2001, although the engine was slightly updated to be more reliable. The same 7.3L V12 was later used by Pagani in the Zonda. A total of 85 SL73 AMG roadsters were built. The SL73 was briefly reintroduced in September 1999 following the SL's end-of-life facelift and a limited number were produced up until December 2001. The facelifted SL73 is the car that appears in the picture (left).
Even more rare is the SL70 AMG which was powered by a 7.0 L V12 engine.
The SL60 AMG was also extremely rare. Sold through MB from 1996 to 1998, it used a 6.0 litre V8 engine producing between 381 bhp (284 kW) and 384 bhp (286 kW). AMG claimed a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) speed of 5.8 seconds. Its top speed was limited to 155 mph (249 km/h), but with the limiter removed, it was capable of approximately 185 mph (298 km/h). AMG later unofficially admitted that 0-60 mph was closer to 5.0 seconds and the engine produced between 405-410 bhp.
The SL55 AMG was sold through AMG in the R129 bodystyle from 1998 to 2001 in limited quantity. It was the predecessor of the production R230 SL55 AMG sold from 2002 to 2008.
Only about 300 cars in the SL-class were customized by AMG prior to 2002.

It is a rare car - very nice. When you say "one of three" though, what are you refering to? And what is the VIN number?

There are reportedly 49 known 6.0L V8 AMG Hammer Mercedes 500SLs; 18 built in 1990, 30 in 1991 and 1 in 1992.Removable Hard Top with Power Convertible Soft Top 6.0 litre V8 engine. AMG claimed a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) speed of 5.8 seconds. Its top speed was limited to 155 mph (249 km/h), but with the limiter removed, it was capable of approximately 185 mph (298 km/h). AMG later unofficially admitted that 0-60 mph was closer to 5.0 seconds and the engine produced between 405-410 bhp.Optional rear seats for two passengers with seatbelts. The Special Edition AMG Hammer package is a rare find, only produced in limited numbers. The 6.0L V8 produces 376 hp at 5500 rpm and a 0-62mph speed of 5.0 seconds. ALL ORIGINAL AMG package featuring AMG FULL Aero Kit, AMG 17-inch 3-Piece Alloys, AMG Exhaust, AMG Leather/Wood Combination Steering Wheel, AMG 300km/h Speedometer.

Hi there,

I own an AMG 500SL 6.0 '92. Please could you let me know the source for the production numbers you've mentioned?

BTW, taking a look at VIN data for this car, I cannot see 957 (AMG Technology Package) nor 990 (AMG Complete Version). From 1,1,1992, those were the codes to identify real AMG units (mine is 957).

Thanks a lot.

Regards from Spain.

In order to see your link, everyone has to register in the AMG classic site..

I did it for the hell of it, but you can't expect everyone to do that.

Why not just copy and paste the data card info into an attachment here for everyones convienience.

BY the way, that is a very special SL you have.., I have never seen a 129 data card before with those AMG options

At the bottom of the data card it has the option 040 Canada Special Edition

Was this car originally sold in Canada, and I see your in Spain?

Oh Hell, let me just copy and paste the data card info and the picture from that site for everyone to see

I'm so sorry... I checked it when I copied the link but, since I'm registered, maybe the site recognize my IP or whatever.

Thanks a lot for posting the info for everyone. I've just tried to help.

Should you want more pics, please ask me and I'll try to post them.

Regarding the option 040 (Canada Edition), I just can confirm that the car was originally sold in Germany, where the previous owner bought it.

Again, thanks a lot.
