So I bought a 450SEL from far away sight unseen with high hopes, only to discover pretty severe rust issues. I don't think it's worth saving the chassis, and if it is, I don't need the engine anyways - I've got another M117 and one is enough - I'm more of a diesel fan.
This is a nice and powerful engine, runs smoothly although I'm sure someone with knowledge of these engines could make it even better. It has more acceleration power than my '74 D-Jet 450SE even in a heavier chassis, more miles, and much better fuel economy. This engine gets around 17-18mpg, versus the D-jet's 11-12. If you bypass the emissions control stuff you can get even more power out of it.
It's still installed in the 450SEL chassis - although I've stripped most of the interior and trim it is suitable to test drive before purchase if you wish. This would make a fantastic candidate for transplant into a W123, that would be a mighty fast car. Or replace a buggered engine on your own 450SL, SE, or SEL. Engine has a very nice sound to it both when driving and from the exhaust. I have put less than 500 miles on it since buying it a few months back, and just want to sell it so I can get on with scrapping the rusty chassis and freeing up room in my garage.
It's up to you to figure out how to get it from it's location in Maryland. Best would be if you could come here with a truck and help remove it and drive it back yourself. I'll buy an engine hoist for the job. I'd like to sell this sooner than later, and am accepting loss on my poor decision to buy the car without inspection first, so I'm open to any reasonable offers.
Also available is the exhaust, radiator, and whatever other mechanicals you might need from the same car.
