i picked up a beautiful 300sd in early september, and put over 7k miles on it (currently just over 301k total). the interior is in terrific shape, and the exterior, a rare teal color, is pretty clean, with only minimal rusting around the rear wheel wells. power seats, windows and moonroof work, with the exception of the rear passenger window. heat/ac and cruise all work great. new battery 3 months ago, and will have new glow plugs in the next couple of days. built in block heater, original factory MB first aid kit, original spare wheel with new tire in the trunk, 4 good tires all around, 3 of which brand new 2 months ago. small gold plaque above the rear view mirror that says "ceasars palace grand prix, sept 25, 1982"
the bad: trunk seal leaks, causing things in there to get damp. passenger side mirror won't adjust properly. the motor moves, but the mirror only goes a little ways and then clicks back. vacuum locks don't work. when i turn the key in the door i can hear the electric vacuum pump in the trunk kick on, but there must be a leak in the system. if i disconnect the tube coming from that pump and blow through it, the gastank door locks, so it could be fixed by tracing the lines and finding the cracked tube. doors and trunk still lock with the key no problem.
lastly, the reason that I'm selling: i discovered that even though the interior and exterior are in great shape, its pretty rusty underneath, particularly on the rear drivers' side, where it has begun affecting the rear suspension on that side, causing the rear wheel to lean inwards. i found out that NY has recently made it illegal/uninspectable to weld on a frame, but im not certain that it's the frame itself in need of repair. it is still driveable, and feels ok, with a valid NYS inspection good until the end of august 2012, but i make a lot of 5+ hr drives back and forth to OH and i don't want to risk getting stuck out there if it gets worse.
i fell in love with this car the second i started it and drove it the first time, and i really hate to see it go. the engine runs very strong and has lots and lots of life left. in the right hands it could be fixed up and enjoyed for years to come. if you're in NY and can rebuild the rusted area, and know a garage willing to overlook the welding job come inspection time, you'd be in great shape.
also, if you're in the central NY area and are willing to take a look and asses the situation, I'd be more interested in having it repaired then actually selling it, because i would rather continue driving it. a photo is attatched, and more photos can be available upon request. If i sell the car, I plan on getting another diesel benz (preferably 81-85 300d or sd) so I am asking $2500 or best offer, and will consider trades or partial trades for aforementioned vehicles. thanks for looking
