FS: 1980 300TD 5-speed *very nice*
Alright, here we go:
I could go on and on but I will try to keep it brief and let those who are truly interested inquire for all the details they want:
Bought the car in 2007 in beautiful shape with 82k original miles on the chassis. Then, less than 1k miles later, all the oil fell out of the engine when I was going 70 mph on the freeway one day. BAD! Got it towed, sat in my garage for almost a year while I figured out what to do. Decided to take on a total rebuild.
Metric Motors build, oversize pistons in bored out original sleeves. Runs amazing. Ran it like that for 10k miles and decided I must have a 5-speed manual transmission. Sourced one out of a 300TD in London, UK, had it sent. Got it here, had it gone through just for good measure, looked wonderful, just had it re-sealed. I did a very clean, professional job of converting it. PROPER FLYWHEEL from MB Classic ($600). I got the original driveshaft, shifter rods, shifter assembly, cross member, etc. No cutting, welding, fabricating, etc. All OEM parts. Before the swap, I had been getting about 22 mpg and hoped for 25 after. Nope, it's been 28-30 consistently. Highway speeds are quieter and much more relaxed. It's simple to bury the 85mph speedo in 5th. I have installed 2 rear headrests in leather, new NOS wood console, rebuilt the majority of the front suspension, almost brand new George Murphy aluminum ACC servo, a/c works. heat works, cruise works great, auto locks work (don't hold as long as they should but they work), Pirelli tires with oodles of tread on all 4, a never-used new Michelin spare. I also got a set of roof rail cross-bars with rubber buffers and got them re-chromed. Looks great. Quality repaint in original Manganese Brown Metallic (not long?) before I took ownership. Still looks great. Interior is in fantastic shape. Great clean dash. One crack by the windshield that you cannot really even see when sitting in the front seats. CD player.
I also have a gorgeous palomino 3rd-row seat with all attachments and seat belts but have not installed it. This is not included but can certainly be negotiated if this is something you care about. All receipts since my ownership in '07 totalling many, many, thousands of dollars. I really don't want to add them up because it will depress me, but you are welcome to. Please don't tell my wife the total. Thank you.
So, in sum, 108k on the chassis. 25k on Metric Motors engine. 15k since I installed the re-sealed 5-speed manual. Just took it on a road trip through Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Nevada. No drama. Took the hills like a champ. Great car. I just want a new project.
Yes, I have lots more pics. Limited to 5 here. Tell me what you want to see and I'll show you. The car and I are in San Pedro, CA.
p.s. keen eyes will catch that my engine bay shot is BEFORE the manual transmission conversion, but it basically looks the same.
