WTB: '82 w123 rims or hubcap wheel cover

I've had my '82 240D for a couple months. It is my child. Left it in the wrong neighborhood for 20 minutes; lo and behold, two go missing. Ordered one off ebay, but decided to ask here before ordering another.

I'm also looking for an upgrade from the wheel covers (bundts maybe?), if I can find a decent price (tuition is killing me).

Best that you go for Bundts type. This way, no worries of any hub covers being stolen --- at the same time, would serve as an "upgrade". Good luck!

You had your hubcaps stolen? Or wheels?

If you want hub caps, what color are you looking for?

Location?

Don't assume Bundts are an upgrade. First of all, are your wheels steel are aluminum? A 1982 240 D could likely have aluminum wheels. Is there a broken white stripe (possibly obscured by brake dust) around the rasied area outside the lug nut area? If so, those are aluminum.

Lots of people don't consider bundts to be an upgrade. They show dirt like crazy and are difficult to keep clean. Also, the retro look is increasingly popular.

Find the color code for your car. Look on the data plate under the hood. My car has the color 623H I think. Useful when looking for more hubcaps.

Oh, the other way you can tell if you have aluminum wheels is to look at the clips on the hubcaps-- if they have a nylon pad on the part that presses against the rim, the hubcaps are aluminum. If they are all-steel where it presses against the rim, the rims are steel...

I'd think that the hubcap rule would only apply if the hubcaps have never been changed (as they are right now).

Were there really aluminum hubcaps? Or was that a typo?

I assumed that all hubcaps are stainless.

I've got about 15 hubcaps stacked in my garage right now. Most are a dark shade:
- pewter (2)
- black (4)
- dark blue (4)
- brown (1) (came with the car)
- paint removed (4) (came with the car, and won't let go)

I've only got one MB car. I could probably let go of one or two without compromising my lifestyle. :-)

I did however pay for all of them but the ones that came with the car.

108 wheels are steel. Regarding the earlier post - I wasn't suggesting that the hubcaps were aluminum. To the best of my knowledge, the hubcaps are either chrome plated steel or stainless steel, depending on year. The part number for aluminum (that take hubcap) wheel is 1234001302 for the 14 x 5.5" and 1234001502 for the Ǖber-rare 14 x 6" wheel... A 240 D would have the 5.5" wheel. It is unusual for a 1982 US car to have steel wheels.

If you had the aluminum wheels originally, the hubcaps would have the nylon surface on the 4 hubcap clips. If you changed the hubcaps, ideally you would take of the steel-only clips from the replacement hubcap and re-use the steel-nylon clips from the original hubcap.

To the best of my knowledge, none of the hubcaps were ever aluminum.

I'm sorry I did not clarify. White hubcaps. I'm in Texas.

Thank you for the fantastic reply. I'm relatively new to the world of Benz (converted from BMW).

I assumed they are aluminum hubcaps (they're extremely light and give off a nice ring). but now I'm certain they are steel. I love the way they look, I just wish they weren't so easy to steal. So I was thinking of Bundts as a cheap alternative to those.

Also, the color code info is very useful, as I'm painting a replacement fender soon! I will look it up today..
