I am pretty sure this is just a normal 280SE which has had the rear seat removed, rear doors parts welded into the body, and rear window and gas tank moved forward, giving more room for a longer trunk lid. The proportions seem right enough that you could reproduce this from any W116 sedan with the right skills. Although certainly VERY uncommon I would not guess this to be worth the investment to restore as it would probably be less expensive and produce a higher-quality result using a sedan and doing the same modifications. Then again you may find somebody crazy enough to buy this for a bunch of money simply because it's so rare.
I'll bet you can find some good evidence by looking for A> the sides of the inside of the trunk behind any lining and B> where the gas cap is, which I would suspect is not moved but rather has a longer hose to the relocated tank. Or it may be moved forward, in which case it's probably still not too hard to find evidence of from inside the trunk. I'm curious as to the inside layout of the trunk, if you have the time to photograph it.
