Not according to the factory service manuals, which is what I based my statment on; I've also asked a couple forum members here who own 280E's and they say steel. That said, I've learned that "anything" could be possible with these old things.
I think that I have seen MB documentation that has indicated the 6" wheels appeared on 280 E cars, but I can't site where that is at present. Regardless, my independent research and fairly extensive collection of wheels that I have hunted over the last two years proves to me beyond doubt that they were present on hubcap 280 E cars from 1981. That's not very many cars. It is not clear why the wheels were only sent to the US market, nor why they never appeared on wagons.
