500/560 VIN

I appreciate your help, bondavi.

The light in the garage is not great and it's rainy out. When it dries up I'll take it out and get some pictures. I haven't found the stamp on the block yet but the sticker on the radiator support says 117.964/965 ECE. What does ECE mean?

The title does say it's a 560 SEC. Is there any explanation for that?

Also, I just tried to list it on Ebay and Autocheck apparently believes it's a 2001 so I couldn't list it. It seems very unlikely that the VIN could've been messed with since the same number is indicated on two stamps under the hood, in the driver's door, and on the title, and it all appears very much original. Is Autocheck confused with the Euro VIN? Any suggestions? I'd like to be able to list on Ebay.

Thank you,
Scott

Glad to help out, Scott!

It depends how long the car was titled in AZ, and how long the 560SEC emblem was on there. If it was on there prior to titling in AZ, the previous owner probably just wrote "560SEC" and the DMV employee took it as such.

A lot of 1984-85 owners were jealous of the new 560 SEL/SEC's that came out, and put the 560 badges on to feel "part of the crowd". A Gen2 Euro 500SEC

ECE stands for Economic Commission of Europe. An ECE motor usually is the most unrestricted form of the engine, as opposed to other versions with lower compression, or catalytic converters installed. ECE versions usually had two piece per side exhaust manifolds (cast) that exit through 2 downpipes per bank (for a total of 4).

THe 10:1 compression ratio ECE 5.0's were rated at around 265hp, higher than the US spec 5.6. ECE 5.6's had 300hp flat.

The reason eBay doesn't accept your euro VIN is because of just that, it is an euro. Put a 1111111111111111 in its place, so that way you can list it by the year, some people just put 1980 (cuz VIN isn't required) and put in the correct year/info below and buyers find that by doing a search. Though I think you're better off with the former solution of putting in a 111xxx VIN.

Check this out - another AZ Gen2 500SEC to give you an idea of how these do exist. Note the VIN statrts out the same as yours, and the car has a single inlet air filter instead of the dual inlet the 560's had. Though, easy to retrofit. Interested in seeing your exhaust manifolds' pic...

The right wheels on the car would help it sell, IMhO. You can see how it just wakes the car right up!

Nice photography work there, Scott!

The first two pics had me thinking "Is this trick model car photography??" THe background and ground surfaces are just too perfect to be real!

Must have been the wheels, then..

Stick the correct 500SEC emblem on there, along w/ wheels and you just might just get your asking price on the car, alone. That color combo of 199/261 is hard to beat in a w126 SEC...

Beautiful car, beautiful professional photogaphy and the words obviously o an honest and forthcoming seller.

The optional burlwood shift knob and aftermarket wheels denotes an enthusiastic and loving owner that knew enough not to change the car very much from its factory stock iteration.

Wildly over-customized cars only reflect the personal taste and ego of the customizer and almost always drive the resale price down, no mater how much money the customizer spent on his modifications.

This car should be a great value to a knowledgeabl and apprciative owner as it stands.

The wheels can be changed to stock or another set of wheels, to the new buyer's personal preference.

It's also in one of the prefered facory colors for these, too, which is, as we know, dark blue, dark red or black.

I have no doubt that if asked, the seller would, if asked, truthfully disclose the reason for selling the car. I would always want to know that if I bought a used car. <----- EVERY TIME..
