1983 300SD $800 422xxx miles (odo has never worked since I have owned it)
This was my first Mercedes and I am still very fond of it. It has been sitting behind my garage since summer. I do not drive it, the plate expired, I dropped insurance... and it is in the way.
This is the most reliable car I have. It is has significant rust and the paint is a mess. The last trip I made in this car was from Indianapolis to Toronto. I have also driven it as far as Virginia Beach.
Seats are a mess, but ARE covered in nice sheep skins.
ALL electrics work.
Older Alpine CD player.
Dash is presumably cracked, has plastic dash cap on it.
Carpet is dirty.
EURO bumpers front/rear
Bundts are pitted pretty bad
All 5 tires are junk. The 4 on the car hold air. My nice set is on my TD.
Glass is good(tinted). Rear window is de-laminating.
Moon roof works but closes slow.
Exhaust is newer MB OEM.
Front end is pretty tight.
Pretty significant rust(see pics, can get more rust shots if required)
I replaced the fenders because they were gone(rust wise) from the mid point down. I didn't want blue fenders so I found a guy on CL to paint them. He said he could do the hood too(clear coat gone). I go pick it up and saw that he used Ford Taurus silver(I bought him a quart of color matched paint) AND it looks like he used a brush.
PO said that he had it replaced at 200k with another engine.
Runs very very good, seriously.
New glow plugs/relay
A/C did work but I over filled it(r-134) and now it leaks pretty good.
About 5* of chain stretch.
Shifts fine but there is a rogue vac leak.
Shifts into reverse rather instantly.
Get's that good SD MPG's. Like 28 on the highway.
I have receipts and stuff for all the things I have replaced (numerous items). The PO had two manila folders of receipts but would not give them to me(wtf?). He was gracious enough to give me copies of the last two receipts he had .
I believe I am the 3rd owner. The PO use to commute between Indianapolis and Chicago with this SD.
SD has sat all winter, I charged the batt and is jumped right to life instantly. It developed an odd rattle last year. I thought it was the crank pulley since it looks like it wobbles a little bit, might want to replace that, but after tightening the crank bolt(it was a little loose) it's still there. The rattle is there when the engine is warm at idle, but does come and go. It is my opinion that it's something loose making metal to metal contact. I really don't want to crawl under there to find it, way too busy. Needs a windshield washer pump since I stole it for my TD.
