You'd be best off borrowing the money and finishing the job; no one's gonna buy a head-removed excellent condition 300E for more than $5-800. With the engine running, it sounds like a $2500-3000 car. How much tuition can you pay with $500?

I agree with pos, no one will be buying a dead car, maybe $500 to $900 maximum, better borrow from parents or a brother os sister to finish the car and that way you can sell a running car for $3000 or more

Actually sounds like another $1,700 to $2,250 car once it's finished. There are very, very few 300Es that get $3,000 and they are truly excellent examples. I question the seller's ability to judge the quality and condition of the car if he can't even tell if it's got a m103 or the m104 engine.

Given the sunk costs, the seller would likely only recover his costs if he completed the car, but only if he was careful with his expenditures going forward. Basically it's a financial loser and it's just a question of how big a loss.

Psst: count the cams or the valves. Photo above is an M103 head.

Around where I live in the northwest a $3,000 w124 is a mint 94-95 with all maintenance records, no issues, and in a great color! something like this would probably fetch more like $1,500 when all repaired and cleaned up...these cars are well undervalued imo

KBB pricing for 1991 300E in your zip code, though I suppose a 1990 is worth more because it's older.

Condition Value
Excellent $2,225
Good $1,975
Fair $1,475

Good luck with your sale.
