1987 300SDL - Died

Yesterday I'm running west on US40 outside of Kingman, AZ at a little over 75MPH w/a good jazz CD playing nice and loud and start hearing this slight hammering noise. I exited and stopped and the hammering went away at idle.

Put it back in gear and slowly drove about a mile and the hammering came back.

I called my favorite MB mechanic and he suggests it could be a blown head gasket allowing water to enter a cumbustion chamber causing the hammering. To be on the safe side I called AAA and had it carried to his shop about 60 miles away.

His preliminary report this AM is it may be more serious than he thought sight unseen. Now we're talking about a shortblock and rebuild to the tune of $5,000.00 to $6,000.00 on the low side.

I can't convince myself it's worth spending that much money on it, although the body has no damage the roof and hood need to be repainted. The interior and the rest is in great shape, with everything working but the sunroof. The AC even still blows lots of cold air down here in the desert and the rest of running gear is in good working order, it even has good tires on it. Oh yeah, it has 256,000 miles on it and is still a dream to drive.

Anyone have any suggestion or interested in making me an lowball offer and resurrect it for themselves.

My problem is I have another large resurrection project going that is eating money faster than I can collect it, so something has to go.

If anyone has any ideas you can contact me.

Roger

I'd find out what is really wrong. More likely a head problem was it still running. As you increased rpm while in nuetral did the knoking go away? Great cars. 247k should not break the bottom end.

Otherwise they seem to go for very little of broken. $4k for a new motor and you have a car for many more miles. X the transmission. But think about it. A used compact is around $5,000 and will surely die in 50k

Thanks for the info, I'm in the process of finding out exactly what is wrong.
