Clean Connecticut title in hand. I also have a copy of the previsous title and registration certificate.
I have many pictures that I can send to you upon request.

The color is astral silver metallic and the interior is leather blue.
Top is dark blue and hard top is astral silver metallic and perfectly matches the car.

I’m the second owner of this car who has been imported in 1981 by Mercedes Benz Austin, TX (part of Continental Automotive Group) from Austria as stamped on the original Mercedes Benz maintenance booklet and as stated in the Carfax report. At that time the car had 650 miles.

The service booklet accompanying the car has 15 stamps from Mercedes-Benz dealers. It lists all the maintenance jobs done by Mercedes dealers from 650 miles to 31740 miles in 1999 as requested by Mercedes. I do not have the service history between 31740 miles and 60000 miles.

The car has been shipped to CT in 2003 as part as an estate and stayed in the original owner family (even though it may be assimilated as a second ownership). At that time, according to the registration certificate the car had 54,000 miles.

The car comes with all the mercedes services booklets, the operations instructions for the Becker leectronic autoradio and the specific automatic climate control manual. It also has the original Mercedes factory tools, the Merdcedes hardtop/softop handles.
I still have the original reserve key in its original packaging, never opened.

The following maintenance jobs have been done recently (2009): new master cylinder, new brake pads, brand new OEM aluminium climate control servo, new rehostat, new engine temperature sender, new fan switch, distributor cap, plug wires, new air filter. New tires.The power steering filter and oil have also been changed less than 200 miles ago.

As it is a Euro model it has the following specifics: Rear Seats which transform this SL in a 4 passengers car, and the V8 5 liters 245hp. The 500 SL is the more powerful SL Mercedes ever made. The 500 SL was published by Mercedes-Benz as having 0-60 times of 7.4 seconds for a top speed of 225 km/h (140 mph).

I should also mention 500SL's alloy 5.0 liter engine suffered none of the timing chain calamities so prevalent on the 380SLs

Equipments: ABS, Air Conditioning converted to 134A (works perfectly), Limited Slip Differential, Switchable Automatic Gearbox, Cruise Control, Leather Seating, Rear Seats, Electric Windows, Green Heat Insulating Glass, heated rear window pane, automatic antenna.
A/C and heat work perfectly as well as cruise control and power windows

Exterior :The doors and all body panels align properly and the paint is smooth and glossy with no evidence of prior collision damage.
The paint is original and in perfect condition. It has some minor pecks and nicks from the years. A very small dent on the right front fender is visible.
There are unfortunately some scratches on the soft top cover (see pictures) from taking on and off the hardtop.

Soft Top:
Outside is in perfect condition. The rear window is cristal clear and doesn’t have any crack.There is a small tear that is hardly noticable (see dedicated picture).
Inside: I think the soft top has rarely being used. However it may have been folded wet and has some moistures marks on the headliners.

Hard Top : like new, pristine condition.

Wheels Tyres Brakes:
Wheels are in superb condition and tires have been changed in 2009.

Engine and Transmission:
The engine has 64,000 miles. It works perfectly and is very powerfull. No oil leaks from the Motor.

Interior and seats:
The Interior is in amazing condition. No tears or scratches. The leather doesn’t show its age at all.
The dash cover has 2 very small craks (see pictures) but it is in very good shape compared to all the other ones I've seen. The carpet doesn’t show it's age. No fading anywhere.

Electrics:
All items works perfectly but the speedo shows a little bit less speed before you reach 50 mls. The odometer woks perfectly.

Boot and Underside:
Overall, the body is in good condition with absolutely NO rust I can find anywhere.
The exhaust is sometimes ratteling at very low RPM. It migh to be changed at some point.

When grey market cars are imported legally, they go thru a federalzation process which modifies them in all ways needed to pass the USA DOT Safety requirements, and if needed engine modifications to meet EPA emmisions requirements.

Bumpers, headlights, and speedometer/odometer changeover are normal conversions. Also you don't get to keep the euro parts they take off, federal law says you can't have them. Which means you need to repurchase the bumpers from another source and have them installed.

Obviously someone put euro lights back on, they just didn't reinstall a set of euro bumpers. The rule is "under 25 years old" to require the changes, if you were to import this exact car from Germany today, it would be exempt and all the euro parts would be legal.

Thank you GLSW for the detailed answers. You are definitely right. The car has been federilized. Beyonds bumpers, speedometers and lights they added the emmissions smog pump under the hood when it was federalized.

I had in mind to put it back to its original Euro look, that is why I bought a pair of Euro lights. Unfortunetely I haven't been able to find a nice Euro bumpers pair that's why it has US bumpers.

In the one close-up photo of the gauges, the steering wheel covers up some of the light switch area, I can't see if this car has the vacuum adjustable headlight aimer option or not, just wondering.

I picked up euro headlights for my 380SL but they don't have the aiming ability, but I understand some do, do you know if that is true?

Sorry but that is just not right.
I brought my 1985 300SL in 1992 to the US and to pass the DOT and EPA the bumpers didn't need to be changed

Hi Damien.
I bought a euro car 26 years ago and kept my bumpers but had to modify to U.S. standards with reinforcement behind the bumpers,which you can't see.

Guys, it all depends on who imported it, when it was imported and where it was imported.
Some importers did the whole kit, others got away with the bare minimum. I suspect the effort required depended on who was inspecting it.

I've had 5 SLC 5.0's, some had cats, some had 02 sensors, some had reinforced bumpers and some didn't. Not one conversion was identical to the other.

My latest Euro 560SEC has nothing, no cats, no bumper mods, still has the kph speedo and it was imported at sometime in the late 90's.

To the extent of my knowledge it doesn't have this option.

However when I replaced the lights I noticed that vacuum hoses -blocked-were present on each side.

Just to let you know that there is a pair of Euro headlights with the vacuum adjustable headlight aimer option.
