Is this a reasonable trade request?
I have a '92 500SL with 113000 miles that's developed some issues involving the ASR and possibly the transmission. My mechanic quoted me a rate of $2000 for some work but can't reliably guarantee the solution to my problem--and hence my reluctance to spend the money. He is diagnosing the idle valve (which was replaced just before I bought the car two years ago and I am not having any high/low idle problems) as well as a "transmission leak" with an indeterminate origin although I am getting smoke and visible leakage out of that area for about 20 minutes after heavy driving. I checked the fluid level a couple of days ago and noticed it was about 1" beyond the maximum level when cold.
Cosmetically, I'd say the car is an 8.5/10 on the outside and a 9/10 on the inside. I also had a lot of suspension work done and the engine harness replaced when I bought the car a couple of years ago.
I am running a local ad soliciting a trade for an early, well sorted-out R107 or at least a sale to fund this switch without any additional immediate outlay (and perhaps enough money to cover a light going-over). Is my objective here reasonable? In the meantime, I'm trying to pinpoint exactly what problems my car has.
