Forget it, will add $4K+ to the price, some risk (if car is not completed in time you lose your bond for 1.5 times value of car AND they crush the car, or if RI that does conversion is not 150% honest they can hold you over a barrel and keep asking for more money for parts, etc), and you will likely lose all the benefits of wanting a Euro car in the first place. And I have not even gotten into the added cost and complexity of making the car CA CARB certified, which is a whole 'nother level of stuff to deal with.

Until these cars are 25 years or, or you find a VERY special car that's cheap and worth the time and risk, I'd say it's not worth it. It's a shame, because this car is very nice, but it is not a process for the weak of heart.

Wow. That hurtz. Is there still such a thing as a "once in a lifetime import" without mods required, at least to the non Kalifornia states?

Nope. Has to be on a special list for racing, show, historical purposes, and no way will DOT put a 420SEL on that list. If it were a 450SLC 5.0 lightweight AMG modified used in the Paris-Dakar rally, maybe, but that's the kind of car that gets approved for the list.

It's MUCH easier and less expensive. Some basic paperwork, duty, and you're done. NHTSA and DOT regs no longer really apply.

so that leaves us at the $64,000 question, Mike, what is the build date on the door jam?

also On 12-22-09 a Mike Anderson from Bellingham WA posted about this car. So is it in the USA already? Or was it? A re-import is not supposed to be much of a problem.
