Pricing advice needed.

OK, I've got my mom's previous car to sell for her. It's a 1987 560SL gray with gray interior, 107K miles. It's been a SC car, so it's solid with no rust. Paint is showing its age, interior is a bit worn, some cracks in the dash. But mechanically it's 100% (except as noted below) and I've got all the service records since the early 90's when she bought it (2 owner) and recent work includes new top, brakes, Michelin tires, exhaust. Runs like a champ. The heat is intermittent, the antenna doesn't go up and the cruise isn't working. Everything else is fine.

I'm a BMW guy, not a Mercedes expert, so I don't have a clue what I should ask for this car. A friend said to put it on eBay and I get what I can get, but that's a little risky for me. And I don't know what kind of reserve to set.

I will list it here (as well as autotrader and all the other options and anywhere else that you guys may suggest) but I don't have a clue what I should expect to get for it. I see prices for these cars from 3K with a salvage title to upwards of low teens for very nice cars.

So... what's a good selling price for a car like this?

Thanks!

Michael

I'm a dealer and buy these at auction, so take my advice with that understanding. That car in nice overall condition, not mint, would get about $5500-$6K at the auction.

Now you're trying to sell retail obviously, so you should get more. Mechanically/service history it sounds like recent work makes it above average, but cosmetically it's worn and those items (paint, interior, dash) can cost more than the car itself to do properly.

If I wanted to make it go quickly, I'd target $5K. Less than that you'd be leaving money on table, more than that might take a while. Make sure you get it detailed before you take pictures for the ad, and be honest in your descriptions.

Good luck!

I agree with Bruce. Your locale isn't helping much either, since the market is so saturated with vintage benzes. I would start at $5750 and be willing to come down some in negotiations.

You could try for more if you're not in a hurry to sell.

Thanks Bruce and Tyler! I took pictures last night, and the interior is not as bad as I had feared, actually quite a bit better as there are no signs of wear on the seats, which surprised me.

Regards,
Michael
