It is the holiday season and I am in a giving mood!
All kidding aside, I have asked myself the same question. I have ~$12k in it and I've owned it for about 18 months. I think it's a matter of supply and demand. I started out at $10k with a pano top included in the sale. I had a couple of nibbles, but no one serious. I have since sold the pano top separately, so the car comes without a hard top - only a soft top. If the buyer wants a hard top, they will have to buy a replacement hard top from a salvage yard or ebay or someone on craigslist. I wouldn't buy one, but that's just me. The first SL I owned was a 1981 380SL euro and I bought it with the hard top. The day I bought it, I took the hard top off and put it in the garage and it stayed there until the day I sold the car 4 years later.
My wife drives an '08 CLK350 cabriolet and it is our family car (wife and I + 1 kid). Owning 2 convertibles (the SL can't even fit all of us as it's a 2 seater) is not practical any longer. For example, when we go on vacation, we need to have a friend or relative take us to the airport as the CLK doesn't have enough trunk space for any luggage.
So, I am buying a 540i from one of my friends to replace the SL. I can only put the deal together once I have sold this car. I have the car priced so that I can hopefully buy the new car before my friend's patience gives and he sells it to someone else.
Someone's going to get one hell of a deal in my opinion.
Hope this helps.
