OK, I am ready to give up and spend $400 on new rims for 300SDL

All,

I am trying for almost 6 weeks now to find a decent set of rims for my W126 to put winter tires on. Daily check on CL, Ebay, FS section in this forum... No luck!!!

mclare did find me a set of chrome OEMs but a) I am not a big fan of chrome rims at all and b) shipping would probably be more than the rims themselves.

So here is my last call before I am ordering a set of ASA 8 hole rims plus General Altimax Arctics from tirerack.

If anybody close to Chicago wants to get rid of 15" rims with the right offset for a W126 (ET11 - ET25)...

I have a set!

I have a set of four non-chromed non-corroded California factory wheels, 15X6.5, I'll sell you for $475 delivered.

Email if you're interested.

Let me know if you need anything else for your SDL

Thanks for the offer but that's more than I would pay for a brand new set from tirerack. Agreed, yours are OEM but for winter tires I don't really care that much.

Cheers

Yeah, that's what I thought too...
I was told at 2 JY that they send all rims to the crusher unless they are "special" - special according to the JY folks. One of the yards did have a set of chrome OEM rims that supposedly came of a W126 but as I said, I am not into chrome and they had quite a bit of pitting.

Thanks

Done - I'll go Nokian WR G2 "All Weather"instead

All,

So today I went to another Nokian tire dealer to get a quote for WR G2 All Weather tires that I plan putting on my wife's Honda Element. At the end I asked about their recommendations for the SDL. Now, this is the 3rd Nokian dealer that suggests the WR G2 for the W126 - as the other 2 stores, they don't even stock any Hakkas since the WR and now the WR G2 are supposedly such good tires on snow and ice that they don't see a need for Hakkas.

While I was trying to explain what a bad car the W126 is in winter, another customer walks up and tells me that he's running Nokian WR on his 300D and had no problems at all last year with all the snow we had in Chicago.
The one thing that I always might be forgetting when judging the W123/126 on their winter capabilities is that my (bad) experience is based on winters in the Bavarian mountains which is a little different compared to the Windy City

Long story short: I'll give the WR G2 and 60lbs. of sand in the trunk a try and see how this combo performs. A good side effect is that swapping and storing wheels won't be necessary - at least not this year

I just got done refinishing my current OEM rims and now I am ready to go!!!

Attached are 2 before/after pictures - sorry for the crappy "after" shot but it was already dark and my flash on the camera obviously sucks. Turned out OK for a 3h job on all 4 wheels. The Rust-OLeum wheel paint is a tiny tad too sparkly for my taste but from 3 feet away it looks fairly OEM (nope, tire pressure is not too low ).

Thank you all for your help!

Cheers
