FS: 1981 Mercedes Benz 240D Diesel - Chicago Area

Hello all,

I have for sale a 1981 Mercedes Benz 240 D VIN WDBAB23A4BB260454 with an odometer reading of approximately 101,XXX miles, blue exterior and blue MB-Tex interior. This vehicle, currently will run on standard diesel, bio-diesel and can be converted to run on waste veggie-oil (WVO), which can save hundreds to thousands of dollars in fuel costs over the course of a year! If you are environmentally conscious, this is the vehicle for you. If you are trying to save money on fuel, this is the vehicle for you. This vehicle will pay for itself in a couple of years in fuel savings alone if you use WVO. With a veggie-oil conversion kit, this car can be run on pure vegetable oil that is domestically grown and produced. Further, kits can be produced where the oil is mixed and filtered outside the car, thus eliminating the need for an in car conversion kit!

This vehicle is in very good cosmetic and mechanical condition, has minimal rust for a vehicle of this vintage and runs better than just about any other W123 diesel I've seen. The mileage can be considered very low for one of these sedans, and while not a "show car," this is an excellent example of a true 123 chassis Mercedes Benz.

This vehicle was re-painted some time ago and is in excellent shape, with only a few mild imperfections such as dings, chips, and scuffs on the exterior. All exterior lenses, trim, emblems, and rubber moldings are present and in good condition (looks as if removed when the car was painted to remove overspray). The glass is clean, clear and original, and all interior trim and accessories are present and accounted for.
The interior is very sharp and clean. The seats are in good shape (Note: seat springs are in good condition!), with rich, blue MB Tex. The dash and wood are in excellent shape with only a few minor cracks. The carpet looks nice all around. A full-sized spare tire along with a vehicle jack and iron are located in the trunk. The interior does have some fading here and there, which is attributed to the vehicle’s 25+ year age.
The vacuum system has been well maintained, with the locks functioning, the dash vents work properly, and the motor shutting off quickly.

This vehicle is equipped with the following:
· Manual windows
· Power central locking
· Factory AM/FM Cassette Player
· Power steering and brakes
· Automatic Transmission
· Air conditioning
· Manual climate control
· Intermittent wipers
· Integrated fog lights
· Four-wheel disc brakes

Additionally, the following components have been replaced for maintenance/repair purposes:
1 All fluids and filters changed: Oil/filter, transmission fluid, main fuel filter and canister filter, rear diff oil, coolant, brake fluid.
2 New belts
3 New glow plugs
4 New battery
5 New front and rear brake pads
6 New tie rods (both sides)
7 New upper control arms (both sides)
8 New idler arm bushings
9 AC: R134 AC conversion was performed.
10 New Power Antenna
Mechanically, this car runs and drives very well. The glow plugs heat right up, and the diesel engine fires to life with a smooth and friendly clatter. The engine accessories turn quietly and work well (Note: The air conditioning system has been retrofitted to 134A). The steering is smooth and easy, and the suspension feels to be in great shape with no abnormal “bumps” or “squeaks”. The brakes stop the car confidently and the transmission shifts well through all gears.
Exterior issues:
· A few small dents and dings as stated above (please see pictures).
· Some minor rust in non-structural areas mostly attributed to rock chips and things of that nature (please see pictures).
· The underside of the driver and passenger doors do have some rust (vise able when open and looking underneath).
· Door and window seals are cracked.
· A hole in a non-structural area (near AC dryer) of the engine compartment has been patched with fiberglass. From spoken history, this car sat unused for a few years and mositure sat on this area and caused this hole.
Both front and rear window seals are very worn out but do not leak.
Could use an alignment after the control arm and tie rod adjustments.

Interior issues:
· Seats are faded but still in good condition. Also note, the seats are from an earlier vintage however they are in excellent condition.
· Minor dash cracks.
· The vinyl surrounding the interior door frame has bunched up a bit (this is very common on these cars).
· The carpet is clean but somewhat faded.
· The visors are wrinkled but functional.

What does it need?

The Cruise control works intermittently (very common issue with older Mercedes.)
The odometer does not properly function. (very common issue with older Mercedes.) Owner estimates to have ~145K on engine/chassis.
