This is a rare European market 190e 2.3-16v 1984 model year (ECE) in smoke silver. There were less than 2000 U.S. versions sold here in 86' and 87', and only a handful of these more powerful, lightweight European versions were imported by private parties. This chassis is stiff and impressively sorted as the W201 was originally designed to be a rally car before the rules were changed allowing the quattro. The 16v head and equal length tuned headers were both designed and built by Cosworth. This is one of the first 400 hand assembled, early production cars so the motor was built by Cosworth instead of later when Mercedes started larger production numbers for export. This car is nearly identical to the one that Ayrton Senna drove to win the inaugural race of the new Nurburgring. This is also TOP GEAR's top pick for the next rare sports car classic.
When it was imported this car was dropped off at H&R for them to R&D their suspension setups before these cars started being sold in America. H&R then developed a custom spring combination paired with Bilstein shocks for this specific car, the previous owner said they track tested seven different spring combinations to find this setup. It is incredibly balanced, comfortable cruising but very solid and responsive in corners. The grip just doesn't stop. Self leveling rear suspension has been deleted due to the H&R/Bilstein setup so you don't have to worry about costly repairs there.
Car has 194k miles on chassis, 49k miles on complete rebuild of 200hp engine (with forged JE pistons), ceramic coated factory header and rebuilt 5 speed Getrag close ratio transmission (dogleg first) with Redline oil. Has a U.S. 3.27:1 LSD rear-end with the lower gearing so it's quicker than even other euro 16v's. Newer performance clutch. New radiator, oil cooler and an SLS pump delete plug. New fuel pump, filter and collector, plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Performance exhaust, now with a new Ansa Sport w/dual tips. Brand new from Mercedes front passenger knuckle/spindle, bearings, races and tie rods. Oil changed every 3k miles with Mobil 1 15w50 and new filter. This car is amazing to drive, smooth power delivery and loads of torque. It feels like an inline 6, but you get the light weight and fuel economy of a 4 cylinder. On the highway, it is amazingly smooth and quiet, unlike a buzzy E30 M3. This car also has a CA B.A.R. sticker for California emissions compliance.
Car has TSW EVO 16x7.5 black eight spoke wheels, w/225/40R16 Falken 512's. Car also has a Momo "Tuner" steering wheel, euro E Code one piece glass headlights with replaceable bulbs (instead of sealed beams) that are height adjustable from the driver's seat, headlight wipers and working "City" lights all run by a red top Optima battery. Climate control is adjustable for the driver and passenger side separately and is directly controlled instead of the troublesome tempomatic control system. One of the hardlines to the AC compressor is broken and would have to be replaced before the AC would work. All electrical is in order, all gauges work including clock and lap timer. This being the euro model it also has an 8,000 RPM tach as opposed to the U.S. 7,000 RPM one. This car has an electric sunroof and windows in the front and wind up windows in the rear. Car now sports an S600 front grill with wider slats.
Car starts right up w/o smoke and drives great, but is a 23 year old car so it's not perfect. The body is very straight with NO rust and paint has a good luster. Inside the interior, the dash has some cracks from the CA. sun and there are some little nicks here and there, but the interior is in good shape. Car has brand new MB factory mats, the seats are in good shape w/o rips or tears especially the rears which are like new, plus the front Recaro sport seats are manual and not electrical for lower weight and less problems. Alpine CDA-9827 model AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA player with a four channel amp provides the tunes.
