240D Engine Question

Hi guys
I bought a 240d used, not running. Everything looked clean, and the guy said there was some small electrical issue. No idea what was wrong with it and didn't have time to deal with it... Everything else looked good and the miles were low, so I took it to my local mercedes mechanic, and he said somebody had driven it to the ground without coolant. The ends of the glow plugs were melted, and now the car needs a rebuild or new engine. Now I understand all of those sayings about used car salesmen...

I was wondering how much time and money I was looking at to rebuild this engine.
thanks in advance

I would post this in the W123 or vintage forum but you're looking at $2000 in parts alone. Labor is about the same unless you do it yourself unfortunately.

The cheapest way to go is to find a good engine, compression test it and install it.
