Just a free bump and was wondering if you had the new truck yet. Do you have any bed ideas for the new truck once you remove the box. I still can't figure out what I want to do with mine...fabricate one or find an OEM one.
The new truck has cleared customs and made it to Sean's place in Georgia, so it is a matter of finding time in the work window to make the trip and go get it...
As far as the box on the back and what's next, I'm all over the map, so to speak.
The existing box is too big; primarily too tall, so I probably won't keep it
for too long. I have a box waiting in the wings, but there is no guarantee
I'll get it ,so I'm looking at a bunch of options.
A new factory bed, a custom Aluminum bed and a new, custom made box are the leading contenders.
I like the DAKAR type boxes that don't add much to the frontal area of the truck and don't add a lot of overhang.
I like the pull out stairs on the existing box, and once I get my hands on it and see what I have to work with, it might be possible to cut down and re-skin the existing Kramer box. Something I can sleep in, but not a dedicated
camper is the general plan, which changes weekly...
I think I'll give up camping comfort for better aerodynamics, if such a word can even be applied to an SBU UNIMOG.
I am kind of in the same boat except I have ruled out any kind of box. I had one on my 416 and only used it a couple of times. Don't get me wrong, it was really nice to have but the hassle of taking it on and off were not worth it. I think with the new truck being a DOKA, that I can modify the rear seat to fold down into a makeshift bed.
So my problem comes down to two things...how do I ever get rid of the fire box and what to make a new bed out of. I have tried to line up factory beds but I would need the spider frame and the whole 9 yards so it would probably be easier and cheaper to make an aluminum bed. Plus the weight savings would be nice. Let me know if you have any photos of bed designs that you may have in your vast collection of photos!
BTW, did you see the latest issue of Excellence magazine? There is an article about the grey '70 911S that belonged to Steve McQueen. Check it out.
Thanks for the tip on the 911S...I'll be interested to see what they say about it.
As far a an Aluminum bed, there are some companies Stateside that make an
Aluminum LANDSCAPE bed, with fold down sides...Home Depot has some
Ford Superdutys that you can rent that have that type of bed on them. They are simple, and would probably look decent, once built to the right size. I have some photos somwhere, but they'll Google up.
As far as your FIRE BOX, it might be so specialized that it'll be hard to find a buyer. Do they need any artificial reefs in Puget Sound ?
