1978 Mercedes 240D engine complete on pallet

Hi guy's this is my First Post on this awesome site and I'm in an interesting position. 2 weeks ago I ordered and engine from a salvage yard in Texas, as some of you are aware replacement engines can be pricey and I fell for a "good deal" I have a 1980 240D and the guy say's sure I have an engine for your car 850.00 to your door I said great ship it out. Well when it arrived my Mechanic who is a Master technician for Mercedes said sorry this is the wrong engine it's out of a 1978 won't work because the a/c is different ie a york compressor also glow plus are different as well as transmission shifting mechanism. so here is the deal I have a 1978 2.4 liter Mercedes Diesel engine complete with all accessories including a/c compressor oil cooler injection pump water pump and if i'm not mistaken the alternator and power steering pump is on there as well as I said complete and on a crate engine was stated to have 140,000 miles this isn't exact but resonable close to acurate as to mileage. If anyone wants to buy it I'm asking 300.00 plus shipping and since i'm an ebay shopper I have a paypal account to except payment.
I'm not a mechanic myself just a Mercedes owner who didn't know his car was so specific in engine requierments. So that being said anyone who wants it can email me at damon459@yahoo.com to make arrangements on sale. If I did this post incorrectly I apologies this is my first post.

So because of the different compressor and glow plugs, your mechanic condemned it?? I would have no problem getting that engine to work in your car. The casting for the block stayed the same for the most part so you should be able to bolt your accessories onto the older engine. for the plugs, no big deal either. get the larger diameter pencil plugs and use your existing harness. I had them in my 78 240D.

I also did a swap awhile back putting a 1980 240 motor into a 1978 300D. biggest problem was getting the linkages to work together but its not that hard to figure out. maybe ask your mechanic to take a second look or find someone else to do it? It will just take some patience to figure it all out, but he is right in that its not a direct drop in swap.

According to the Mechanic the casting of the block is different so yes he could make it "work" but I would not be able to a/c a requirment I wanted met as I'm moving to Arizona and sure in MT a/c isn't really needed because it's only in the 80-90's in the summer and are summers are shorter. As to the other issues it's true there are glow plugs that will work however they run 25.00 a piece also we would have to chang out the injection pump because of the 1980 transmission using vacuum rather then linkages for shifting and to mont the linkages I have currently we would also have to swap the valve cover. After considering all the stress I'm scrapping my 240D for parts I only paid 500.00 for the car and since 240D's and 300D's aren't selling for 6-8k I can see investing more into this one they what I would pay to buy a newer 300 series with a turbo so thats why I'm offering the crated engine to someone who might needed at a price I think is more then fair if someone has a gem they need a spare engine for. As for mine with the thrown rod it will most likely end up resting in pieces as I have no more desire to sink cash into it. Thank you for the reply and suggestions.

I want to put a 240d motor in my 300d- I could use the extra mpg. How much to ship it to Michigan? Or maybe Chicago? Or maybe I could pick it up... Got the trans too?

Sorry guy's I forgot to keep up on this post, the engine was in Montana as was the parts car. As of 3 years ago everything was sold, I'm posting this because I'm still getting emails about the engine. I'm sorry to say the second Benz diesel I bought was another nightmare. So I'm now driving a Jeep Liberty with the VM Motori diesel engine, which treats me right and has more affordable parts. Good luck motoring, I miss owning a Benz but the 2006 jeep almost feels like a Benz, IE headlights, window controls in center console.
