I bet it's happened already, but not for one in good nick.
The nearest to giveaway I've seen locally was a '92 S600 for equiv. US$5000 approx. at auction - they will only depreciate further....sadly.

i will tell u why.

The reason they will depreciate further is because the actual component quality , is very ordinary , actually its not even that good frankly. the design of the vehicle itself is good, but the amount of common faults in these cars beggars belief.
Especially for a vehicle that carried a way past premium price tag in this country. mine was $219,000 Aus new im told. Which was approx the cost of 2. houses here at the time.
I am bye the way qualified to comment on this as i have an extensive background in manufacturing , particularly plastic mouldings and metal components.
The fact that the 140 i own has not even reached 200.000 km yet is just wrong .!
I will give u a rundown on all the so called common faults that it has.
firstly ":
1 : the wishbone bushings totally shot.
2 : the amplifier has virtually done a meltdown , the fact that it has no cooling fan in australian conditions really helps . well done Bose u did ur research well as to where ur product was being sold. !
3 : the blower reg blown , of course.
4 : the vacuum pump under seat no less.
5 : the vacuum pump in boot , guess . ?
6 : temp readout on dash , blown.
7 : chain tensioner , of course, on its 3rd , not to mention smashed plastic guides.
8 : hideous rattle from rear end when traversing a bump, believe to be shocker caps.
9 : water bottle level disintegrating .
10 : the absolute rubbish plastic junk the glovebox catch made from , broken.
11 : driver seat plastic drive gear stripped of teeth, smart idea, to lift a large person.
12 : driver window , i suspect will no doubt go, as is starting to make tell tale noise.
13 driver door , starting to make clacking noise.

I find the most annoying thing about all of this is that the faults are not difficult to design out and the factory knows exactly how long the componentry will last for . i thought i was buying the closest thing to a perfect car when i bought this vehicle, as i had a 126 prior , and that was an amazing car. the last of the quality mercedes it seems. !

Well if you hate it so much sell and buy something else. You know even the smallest amount of research would have given you that list of problems. Mines now at 203,000 and aside from being on it's 3rd gearbox (two by the previous owner and one by me) I cannot fault it.

You know I have to come back and say a bit more because people like you really grind my grears. IF you have a background in the field you say you are I don't know who is more stupid the people who designed in you opinion such a cheap car or the fool who saw and felt what the car was made of and got one anyway only to bitch and moan about it later. Alot of the damage in your car seems to indicate ill treatment of the auto rather than anything else.

Wow that person got a bargin. The one in Queenstown was a 92 600SEL white over grey, listed for 10k.

I will have to agree. Compare any of our Benzes to a let's say 4 to 5 years old American Ford, GM or Chrysler products and these "issues" suddenly seem quite minor. Remember these are cars built for daily use and what really matters is the safety of ALWAYS getting where you need. Sure, my temp readout sometimes disappears and last week one of the window switches went out (will fix that in a couple weeks) but the car still gets me home in a safe manner. Yes, some of the plastics in the trunk are cracked ... oh well that comes with using the car. Just get the stuff fixed if you want and otherwise leave it alone.
