WTB - Drive shaft for an '83 240D
I've been hanging around on this forum since I bought my first Mercedes from panamacolin a few months ago (a 1983 240D). I just finished grad school and bought a car to take me out west to start my life and find a career so I've been putting a lot of money into (read: racking up debt) making sure the car will get me to my new home with no problems--I got new tires, put on new brake pads, changed the oil and oil filter, air filter, both fuel filters, installed a new non-leaking primer pump, adjusted the valves, tightened up the linkage, soon will replace the thermostat, the fuel hoses, injector return lines, a rear axle shaft, flush the radiator, and change the oil again (in anticipation of the 4000mi drive), and some other stuff I've probably forgotten. All of that will take me to about the limit of what I can spend on the car and still be able to afford diesel for the trip.
Unfortounately, I just found out that the center univeral joint on my drive shaft is shot and the whole section of the drive shaft needs to be either rebuilt or replaced. Optimally, I'm hoping to find a used shaft off a scrapped car around my area (SW Florida), next best would be to find such a shaft somewhere else that could be shipped. Buying a new shaft is out of the question. If all else fails I will have to have my shaft sent out for a rebuild. I really cannot afford this.
If anyone knows a good scrap yard anywhere between Tampa and Naples that might have a drive shaft, I would really appreciate this information. Also if anyone in this area has one they'd be willing to sell, please let me know.
I appreciate all the information the members of this board contribute--it's been an invaluable aid so far and will continue to be I'm sure.
I only need the half of the drive shaft which includes the universal joint (the rear half I think?) and bearing since the other half was replaced with a used one not too long ago when (it appears--I didn't own the car at the time) the shaft broke loose from the transmission and beat up the transmission tunnel.
[Edit: the car has a manual transmission.)
