RE: wanted fan clutch

Hi, Meroula.

Are you looking for a used one? These things are ridiculously expensive for your sedan (about $250 at a discount), but for that age of vehicle were it mine I really wouldn't put a used one in, it soon would probably have the same issues as yours.

Since yours is making noise, be sure to check it for turning resistance when cold and for free play/end play both warm and cold. A destructive failure is rare, but if it happens it will do serious damage, if you have lots of free play/end play that is more likely.

A more-affordable alternative we used to do long ago is to replace the fan clutch and fan with a stainless "flex" fan and spacer. It's very functional (the blades flex as revs increase, part of the idea of the clutch) but they tend to be noisier ("whooshy" kinds of sounds). I don't know if the noise would rise to the level of intrusiveness to your ride or if you'd care, but thought I'd throw that in as an idea.

Good luck and enjoy the ride,

RE: wanted fan clutch

Hi, I just replaced the fan clutch on my 300se recently. Before I did, I looked into getting a flex-fan or electric fan/thermostat to go into the car. While they may be cheaper in some comparison, IMHO Mercedes designed it the way it is because it was best to do so. I got a new Behr clutch from Drivewire for $135.81, which was the cheapest I found online. Quick delivery. Works great!

You may want to just "eat" the cost for a new one. They are much cheaper online, instead of the dealer, and just a little more than a salvage yards used one.[:)]
