ATTENTION BENZ ENTHUSIASTS -- This car needs some engine work to pass smog inspection. It does not make sense for me to pay for it, as repairs may be upwards of the point at which point it would be more beneficial for me to accept the state's offer to retire the car for $1000.

In excellent exterior/interior condition. Always waxed - paint in great shape. Supple leather. New tires. This is a clean, shiny, GOOD looking car. Also includes a newer Sony CD/MP3/AM/FM deck I installed a couple years back. Huge trunk. Tires were replaced recently.
I've just learned more about the smog issue with this car. In order to sell it, without passing smog, I would need to first register it as "non-operational." This is the only way to transfer title on a non-smogged car.
Registration for the Benz is in October, and I'm allowed to register as "non-op" 75 days prior. So, I'm actually not able to sell this car until the end of July.

And I thought MA rules were strange! CA takes the cake. Not sure why they'd care if the car was smog legal when sold. If the car is under repair, it should be your prerogative to sell or keep. Weird!
The issue is resale in the state of CA. It has been legally the Sellers responsibility to obtain Smog certification for many years now. The registration on this car is good till October. The owner has the right to pollute right up to expiraton. Then as long as you send in the registration money you can also ask for an extension after it fails Smog, and drive and pollute some more. Usually you non-op a car at registration to keep from having to pay the fees if it's staying off the roads and being restored etc... I think the Sale could happen in CA. if the new owner signs for responsibility of the Smog Cert. When we bought our C-220 four years ago we took care of the Smog cert.
I would be interested in knowing what the repair shop or Dealer has told the present owner about the cars problems with passing.
Nice job keeping this car up to par for this long!
The way I read it, if any buyer out of CA buys the car then it sounds like a non issue. Especially in states or counties where emissions tests are not a requirement.
