For Sale - Free - '73 220D

Yes, free - 1973 220D, White - I bought in late 1977 - built in May '73 - originally a "built-for-Europe" version. My wife says it's been in the driveway long enough - I agree, unfortunately.

(ADDED 24 MAY - 3 items, 1 in Cons, 2 in odds and ends)

Location: Fayetteville, GA (South side of Atlanta)

Best part is the engine.
But there's a lot of rust - worst part is in both front seat floorboards.
Hard/impossible to jack up normally.
Interior needs redoing.
Needs repainting badly.

Engine is an MB Factory re-manufactured 220D 615, which I personally installed in 1990, and then I put 75K miles on it. Not started since 1998. I bought an '85 300D Turbo in late '96 because floorboard rust just not safe anymore.

Other cons / pros :

Cons:

- front bumper slightly dented in
- two rear tires flat
- left rear door has bad rust - it apparently was damaged in some fashion before I had it - the bondo/paint is all coming apart
- windshield/rear window leak (orig windshield, therefore lots of pitting) (rear window's heater has many lines that are inop)
- manual transmission is stuck in neutral (stuck in '98) (it did this also in '81, fixed by MB dealership)
- missing the hood star (but not the holder it goes into)
- A/C compressor probably not good anymore - was going bad
- tail lenses brittle from age - right one broke but re-glued
- (ADDED 24 MAY) The top of the chrome grille has several bad rust spots, and one of the horizontal strips' attach points is not attached.

Pros:

- Engine, as stated above
- clutch pressure plate, disk and throwout bearing replaced new in 1990 w/ engine replacement (only 75K on them)
- new windshield/rear window seals never installed (I have them)
- manual sunroof
- 4 hubcaps, decent cond
- all other glass is intact
- all doors/fenders, hood, trunk lid, body, no dents
- all gauges/speedometer work - in fact, summer 2006 I had to use the '73's entire cluster in my '84 300D Turbo for awhile, because its oil gauge sprung a leak - the oil gauge fitting matched perfectly
- all doors shut like MB doors should (one door's latch is finicky)

Other odds and ends:

- originally a "built for Europe" version, but converted before I bought it - has a European-located right-fender mirror (needs plastic ring to hold mirror in)
- (ADDED 24 MAY) Also, this being a "European version," the back deck's model "nameplate" is "220D", and not "220DIESEL".
- (ADDED 24 MAY) It also has a 200,000km mileage award badge and certificate.
- original Kilometer speedometer went out - replaced in '82 with a 230 (I think) Kilometer speedometer (just happened to be non-US kind - from junk yard in Nebr)
- originally did not have A/C - I installed from a '71 220D in '83 - original console did not accommodate A/C - I replaced all vacuum units in '95
- originally had leveling system, which never seemed to work quite right - - its hydraulic fluid container stayed in place until I installed the A/C, because the receiver/dryer apparently had to go where the container was -- so, if you need a few leveling parts, they're there
- replacement engine does not have leveling system pump (I forgot to specify that for the replacement engine, but then I wasn't planning on hooking the leveling system back up anyway)
- extra red light on rear bumper (a European thing)
- BIG maintenance manual (obtained when I bought the '71 220D)
- original owner's manual, with a few maintenance stickers remaining

I'd really like to see this go to someone who could use the engine. One local guy with a VO/BIO-D home-conversion (done by someone else) '71 220D says he probably should take this engine in case his original goes out, but I haven't heard from him in the last 6 months (he's not mechanically inclined).

I could possibly transport it free in the local Atlanta area, maybe a little further. I need to find out if my son has, or access to, a car trailer.

If I had the time and money, I'd completely redo everything - new floor pan, etc.

Hi Dave,
I found it. My family lives in FL, so I'm going to contact my brother to see if he has a suggestion for me + shipping or whatever.
Thank you again!

A year later, still in driveway - but we called a place to pick it up next week (next week being Mon, Apr 28 - they haven't called back for a firm pick-up date yet, though), unless someone here wants it before they get it. How about the hubcaps? Would anyone like those at least ?

Cheers - Dave H. (HomansGA@cs.com)

My White Knight 220D has been towed to greener pastures on Sat, May 3. I have an unopened hood ornament star (with spring hardware - bought brand new several years ago). I'll put this on a separate post in this forum, and maybe ebay.

Cheers, Dave H.
